Hi there folks,

I assembled my sytem many years ago now and have decided that the time is right to upgrade some/part of my system. Question is, which should i upgrade first, CD, amp, Speakers?

I have a Naim CD 3, an Audiolab 8000S (sorry!) and a pair of Naim Credo floorstanders.
Been away for so long i have no idea what to upgrade - suggestions very welcome.

P.S room is 14 x 14

Welcome to the forum, Wes. If you live near a Naim dealer I would get down there and listen to some options within your budget. A CD5x, 122x and 150x would be a good starting point. Assuming that you like the Credos, I would leave them well alone.

A warm welcome Wes Smile

I agree with Nigel on both going to your local Naim dealer and have a good listen to what is on offer within your budget. Again, a CD5x and 122x/150x would be quite a step forward from your current CD3 and Audiolab and your credos are still good enough to show the improvements of the new kit.

Welcome Wes

Your Audiolab needs no apologies, selling it would still fetch a fair price!
Really depends on what you want to spend. Quite frankly ANY of the current Naim kit will be a major step forward.
I have been using the 'entry' CD5i-2 and the Nait5i-2 and I have been amazed at what this combo digs up.
The Credo's are the last part you should replace. However, imo the Credo's are out matched by newer rivals at less cost.

Let us know your budget/expectations.

Hi Wes and welcome.

I too, like John am using the CD5i-2 and Nait5i-2. I have used much more expensive Naim kit and I can truthfully say that this combination is in no way disgraced by it. In my opinion it is amazingly musical and totally satisfying to listen to. Many years ago I used a CD3 - in my opinion the CD5i-2 is a totally different animal, and absolutely streets ahead. The only thing they have in common is that they are both Naim and both entry level. Obviously I have no idea of your budget but I would start by listening to the 5i-2's either with your Credo's if you can take them along, or n-Sats, which again are superb and an excellent match. If you want to go further, and can afford to, then the dealer will be able to demonstrate the various options. Have fun!

Regards,

Peter

Wes,

What's prompted this?

Have your listening habits changed?

Are you into new technologies such as downloading music?

Do you wish for more without knowing what more there is to wish for?

Frank.

Good point. Supernait has a DAC, and is (1) box.

On the source (ie. CD player), you have three options: upgrade (eg. CDX2), sidegrade (eg. CD5 variants), or modify (which Naim don't endorse).
