Anyone out there tried both of the above cables and willing to comment on their relative merits?

Background - I have CD5x/122x/150x and Art Stiletto speakers, currently joined together with Chord Epic Twin (single wire). I feel this is a pleasing improvement over NACA5, but have kept the old cable, and will reconnect it in a few months just in case. I've joined the binding posts on the speakers with Chord Signature jumpers - very impressive in some ways, but I sometimes wonder if too much of the sacred PRaT has been sacrificed. I'm curious about how Chord Epic Super Twin (which will enable me to ditch the jumpers) compares. Alternatively, I could experiment with short lengths of Chord Epic between the speaker binding posts.

As I say - has anyone tried both?

Thanks
Nigel

Try an "F" connection with your chord Epic first. This should improve on what you have now.

Also do you have your Epic connected to the treble connectors or the bass connectors. They should be connected to the treble connectors for optimum sound quality,

I thought the single wire Chord Epic was the best Chord speaker cable I have heard, superior to the reference red and black stuff. But I didn't like the Super Twin at all in my system.

Would this be worth trying on my neats PB?

Cheers

If you're considering Super Twin I hope you have a HiLine between your CD5x and 122x! If you don't you're looking in the wrong place to start with.

If you run short clips of odyssey (same as EPIC without the braid) between the biwire posts that'll work. Alternatively, the F connection is a good choice.

Frank.

All opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of any organisations I work for, except where this is stated explicitly.

Hi Frank

Yes, I have the hi-line in place - and massage it obsessively!

Is Odyssey relly *identical* to Epic, apart from the braid?

Thanks

Hi PB - yes the cables go to treble first - I tried it both ways and went with what my ears told me.

Cheers

Hi abbydog - care to elaborate - what did you dislike about Super Twin?

All tinny midband and no bottom or top. Reverted to NAC A5 very quickly indeed. Strange, because single wire Epic is the closest I've come to moving from NAC A5...

Droodzilla,
I have tested both the Epic and Epic Super both in single runs over a two week period with inserting NAC5 back in between tests just to assses the differences and have come to these conclusions on my system, CD5/Hicap 82 Hicap 180 Hiline driving Royds RR2`s

1.Nac5 is the best VFM cable you will ever buy for naim gear.
2. Chord Epic (not super)is A BETTER BALANCE in my systemm than NAC5. To me it all hangs in the vocal department, with vocals sounding much more lifelike eg Marvin Gay`s voice in Whats Going On gives the warmth with the epic that is definely missing with the NAC5.I always thought my naim system setup, olive, would probably not be able to produce this warmth but I was wrong this cable change produces a much better balance with vocals.I would say the bass becomes slightly more rounded, less lean but I definetly prefer its balance to NAC5.
3.Epic Super is totally awasome and totally useless for me as it produced a massive soundstage that my system could not handle at all.In my system it sounded overblown and almost out of control.

To summerise, I think it totally comes down to the system components you are using and the type of sound you prefer. I was looking for a bit more warmth thoughout my system and the ordinary epic cable was the perfect fit. I totally agree with the post above and would say this cable is the nearest best match to NAC5 that I have so far heard, infact in my system and probably a lot of olive based systems, I would say epic is a better match all round.

Hi Marco

Thanks very much for the detailed write up, which was just the sort of info I was after - recognising that in the end I will have to sort out a demo and let my ears decide.

Massive, out of control soundstage? Sounds fantastic! Smile

Cheers
Nigel
