As indicated I am replacing Epos 14's. I've been out of the Hi Fi loop for some 5 years and so I haven't a clue what to look & listen for these days. Domesticity requires slim-ish floorstanders against the wall. Finance says up to £1000.00. Common sense is always looking at 2nd hand. Music says non classical repetoire, bias towards acoustic stuff. Sondek & CD I at front. What are Naim's own spkrs like ? Ideas, suggestions appreciated.

Hi Dave!
I have the same setup as you, but with a flatcap on the 92. I have just switched from Monitor Audio Studio 2's to Intro's (mkI with external XO's) and they sound really great. I have placed them approximately 5 cm's from the (back)wall and no problems there. The sound, well, fast and energetic, but never muddy. They do remove some body from voices, compared to my MA's, but I can live with that. I think these will give me pleasure for a couple of years! (Untill I have a better setup and can afford SBL's)

Regards, Bas

but I had to tell Dave W that Intro IIs are even better than Intro Is. I don't have any idea what they cost in the U.K. but they should be around the specified budget.

Well, my Intro's have been upgraded, perhaps I should have mentioned that!

But I must say I have no idea if they are the same as MKII's now. Most important: I believe they sound wonderful. So please, don't spoil the fun ;-)

Ah, and I feel some fun coming up: it's better to buy MKI's AND a HiCap for your 92!

Good luck!

I second the Intro suggestion, but they are a little room dependant. Get a home dem or buy a s/h pair. If buying s/h and you find they don't work you can always sell them for what you paid.

Dave, much of your prob may be coming from the lack of grip the 90 has on ES14's. You're heading in the right direction; counterpoint is to not go with intros, but instead consider 32.5/HiCap/140, or 72/hi/140 or 102/Napsc/140 or similar. These superior preamps would help both of your capable sources, without ever-exposing them; and you'd gain additional grip and control with the ES14's.

So unless you now have new space considerations that the ES14's don't work in, or have just plain gone off ES14's, do consider this alternative approach rather than a back-end side-grade. IMHO, of course.

Welcome to the forum, BTW!

Hi,

If your room can support the Epos I would actually keep them and get better amps s/h as Rico has described.

One of the best dems of Naim equipment I had was at Studio 99 (RIP) with a CDi, 72, HiCap, 140 into ES14's with the speakers posiitoned out into the room.

Intros are really good but your speakers are great too, they just need better amps.

Regards,

Dev

Dave,

I'd add Neat Mystiques to the short list identified by others. And you should also add Royd to the list of contenders -- Minstrel SEs, Sorcerers, Doublets. But get a home dem before you buy. I've never had a good correlation between what I hear in a shop and what I hear at home.

By the way, all of the speakers I've mentioned come in at under 1,000 UKP, so you should have enough left over for a power supply -- new Flat-Cap2 or used Hi-Cap.

Rico is spot on.

You should keep the ES14s and spend your £1000 on amp upgrades.

Its been said many, many times but the 14 was designed using a Sondek/Ittok/Karma/32.5/Hi/250.

Bluntly, a 90/92 combo is just not good enough.

If it were my money I'd buy a used Hicap and 140, then replace the 92 ASAP.

Rob.

Rob is spot on.

I bought a pair of es14's to use with my then 72/snaps2/140(conv 110) and thought mmmmmh not so hot--very mediocre + strangled midrange.I heard them 14 yrs ago and loved them--therefore made the purchase in a severe bout of flat earthitis.

just bought a 160 and now a 250(upgrade frenzy)
and whilst they were unlistenable compared to my silky atmospheric Monitor Audio 852 golds--now with some power they just rock
The strangle has turned into control---the atmosphere is there but with subtle details too. They beat the MA's which show less of the 140-->250 improvement

They need high Naim watts and a good source
The problem is how long along the upgrade path will you need until you are able to feed these highly demanding beasts to your satisfaction.
Can you borrow any kit to try?

They are not a mid end speaker--the intros are probably less demanding(engineered for 92/90)but ?end potential(never heard them)

Cheers
Richard

PS Await my SBL's back from Naim---they were so awful I sent them away for new mid/bass

Rob--long live those with a spare room of speakers--found those IBL's yet.

P.P.S Pair of MA 852's in loot for £150(not mine)
In there for a while ?negotiable price---what a steal---need room though
