What with all the renewed Mana buzz around here since the Epiphany of Vuk, I’ve been feeling rather left out of things as an unfashionable owner of Base stands.

So I started wondering whether Base stands were also sensitive to ‘tuning’. Until now I’d assumed it was a case of the tighter the assembly, the better. But even a tightly-assembled Base stand is far from rigid, in the way that, say, a Sound Org table is, so I figured that absorption, as well as isolation, was part of the overall equation.

Sure enough, loosening the various spikes, nuts and pillars until they were just finger-tight gave a noticeably more relaxed, natural sound, with more tuneful bass. I don’t recall any guidance from Base themselves on this; does anyone else have any thoughts?

Now, who’s going to be the first Base owner to try seven Base platforms under their turntable / CD player?

Jon

PS: Dave Dever – you were SO right about the PS Audio 300 power plant. Complete waste of time in my set-up. Like pouring syrup into my speakers. Yuk.

...as it's difficult to use a wrench on Base cones as it is!

Dave Dever, NANA

P.S. Do make sure that the pillars are tight to each other (though not so tight so as to disengage the spot welds that hold the threaded shafts in place); best done if you assemble the stand upside down, no more than 1/8 turn past resistance.
