Approx 3 weeks ago took delivery of my new system Rega Jupiter 2000 cd player, nait 3, flatcap, into2 speakers, Music Works mains blocks and power lead for cd player.

Unfortunately it all seems to sound fierce/harsh when volume is at 1/4 and tiresome to listen to. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be the cause. The system has been well run in.

Naim are proud of the fact that their dealers will install a system to your satisfaction. So if you're not satisfied, get your dealer to come and sort it out.

Did you have a home dem. before you bought it ?

If its brand spanking, then that could explain some of it. Stick a CD on, and press 'repeat' and leave it alone.

Otherwise, ditto on the other posts, it shouldnt sound like that so get the dealer back and get him to sort it out!

It could be the mains block, if a conditioner is used.

Trevor is correct about the Naim being proud of the dealers installing a system to your satisfaction. It even says that in the manual. I would contact the dealer straight away and start off with looking at the installation. You are using Naim speaker cable? Check that the interconnects and speaker leads are in the correct direction:

1) SNAICs have a plastic ring closest to the source
2) NAC-A5 has the writing reading towards the loudspeakers while the side with the raised ridge running down it is +ve.

It could also be an "off" component - I had that with a Rega Radio.

Ged;
What's your room like?

I've had to 'damp' by room with acoustic panels to deal with a similar problem.

As the equipment gets better; the room has more information to 'deal with' and I reckon it gets more difficult to extract the full potential from the system.

Something else to consider is supports. I've just got my stuff off steel framed racks and onto wooden structures. The sound is a lot warmer and the harshness has gone.

Mains supply can also make a difference. Do you have good quality plugs and sockets etc?

I have just discovered a good quality enlarged 13 amp plug from Maplin which accepts four power leads. Thus; you can run the lot from one good quality socket.

Given a reasonable working environment; the gear you have should not sound harsh, with the possible exception of the speakers which can be a bit 'in-yer'face'

Good luck.

I didnt have a home dem, but system was installed by the dealer who is great and I don't have any problems with.
The gear is all brand new except for the flat cap which is approx 15 months old, I only got this 2 days ago along with a replacemnet Jupiter as my original had slight cosmetic damage caused by the courier. Unfortunately this replacement jupiter has problems too, it won't advance through tracks using the button on the facia, also when you change cd the laser is looking for a cd before the lid is closed and gives the message 'no disc'. So that is being returned tomorrow. I Don't know wether to have a listen to the cd5 now I have the flatcap given the problems with the rega. Anyone compared the Jupiter against the CD5 originally I prefered the Jupiter but that was before the flatcap.
I think my room is well set out and I have the equipment set up on wooden stands although how good the acoustics of the room are is anybody's guess.
The mains block is not a conditioner (see:-http://www.audio-counsel.co.uk/page4.html for details) and the my dealer changed my wall socket to a suitable one.

Andrew, all cables are good quality/in correct direction etc.

Juan, your description 'in-yer'face' describes exactly how I feel, maybe when I said harsh/fierce
I was going overboard, its just that I have this nagging doubt about the sound I am getting, everyone else (friends/family) think it sounds fantastic, but they only listen for short periods when no doubt it sounds very impressive. IS IT THE INTRO 2's, should I listen to other speakers,

HELP!

Ps
I know I am making the mistake of listening to the sytem too much and not the MUSIC.

No, no no! No problem with that at all. You should expect a minimum standard with the amount of money you're laying out.

This may be your lucky chance to try to CD5. Do it now while you can - ring up your dealer and tell him to bring one over.

Ged,

if you have any other sources plugged into the NAIT then remove them temporarily.

Also worth trying the player plugged into different inputs, just to see if any sound better.

What interconnect are you using between CD player & amp?

cheers, Martin

P.S. FlatCap will need some time to settle in, especially if it's been out of use for a while. Did the dealer install the new PS?

Martin,
I don't have any other sources, as I just sold my belover LP12, will try other inputs, not sure what the interconnects are, they were supplied by dealer, however he advised not changing them.
How long do you reckon the flat cap will take to settle in? also I installed it myself.
cheers

I can back up Ken's advice.

I have the original Intros and my dealer set them up correctly after I'd been in my new house for a few months. It made a big difference to the bass and clarity of the speaker. It's critical that they are firmly coupled to the floor.

A common way of ensuring that they are is to place the speakers on philips head screws you're screwed into your floor.

1. Screw philips head screws into the floor where your spikes will go. Make a template out of card or paper to ensure you put the screws in the right place!

2. Screw your speaker's spikes in as far as they can go. You want them out just enough to clear the philips head.

3. Please the speakers on the screws in the floor.

4. Adjust the phillips screws until the speakers are level and don't move.

It's a little bit of effort but well worth it. Even better if your friendly Naim dealer comes round and does it for you!
