Hi, everyone,

I heard a lot of Naim fans saying that using an ordinary 3-way adaptor and directly plug into a nearby ac socket can provide a sound quality even better than an expensive power bar. Can anyone here share their view on this? Thx.

Jimm

Are you referring to this - the 'Multiplug'?

Is that not the Naim plugin for the latest release of the Mozilla Firefox browser?

I'd be thankfull if anyone can tell me about possibility to preserve a star earth with several Powerlines in the system.
I mean, if you have Hydra there is no problem, but moving from Hydra to Powerline is a double edge knife.

Please enlighten me, thanks.

It's commented upon on the various Powerline threads, Oz.

I use one of those multiplugs. It sounds a lot better than what I had before. But - and this applies to the Hydra too - to what extent is the improvement due to star earthing, and to what extent is it due to the removal from the circuit of four fuses and all the dodgy internals of a mains extension?

As I have heard from Naim personnel on a number of occasions on official dems of Powerline, although star earthing is a consideration, in the balance of being able to do achieve x or y (star earthing or connection quality) the benefit of star earthing is eclipsed by the benefit of the quality of connection.

My understanding (and I have just checked this with someone who should know) of Star Earthing is that ALL Ov points within the system are referred, as well as can be implemented, to one central connection to mains earth.

In recent Naim systems this occurs within the CD player or CD player head unit.

In the case of CD players with an external PS - the linkage takes place in the head unit but connects to mains earth through the Burndy, via an internal PS link wire, to the PS mains lead -- and mains earth.

Also, within each circuit module (say a preamplifier) there are gains from bringing all Ov lines back to one point prior to referencing that back to the system earth point

SO in the main (all things being equal) - the use of other (distant) earth points for only the CASE safety earths should not affect this star earthing.

The hydra does seem to provide benefits over multiple leads and sockets.
My learned colleague has added - this advantaged may be lessened when a spur (radial) with separated earth is present. This is predicated on that separate earth being of (and being maintained at) a higher quality than that available from the mains.

Hi Adam,
This is good info. This could explain why the hydra doesn't work as well in the US.

Hi Adam,

I am referring to this:

The one you showed may not be available in Hong Kong. I am a brand new user of Naim (202/200/cd5x), and is trying to figure out the best way to connect cdp and amp to the power. My question is if we simply use multiplug and plug cdp and amp directly into wall socket. will it produce a higher quality sound than a power bar (extenstion)?

Thx.

IME these three way adaptors are pretty grim. An instant deterioration in sound quality.

I use the "multiplug" posted by Adam.

Cheers
