I have always left my Naim kit on and playing while away from home at work, playing the 02. When I returned home today and opened the door I did not hear any music playing. I regarded over the rack and saw there were three green buttons on the 82's top row lit and two red buttons on the bottom row lit.

No wonder nutt'n was playing, the 82 was indeed confused. I re-plugged its napsc from the wiremold power strip and all was restored.

As I have a separate mains run to the Naim kit I do not believe there was any induced external electrical impulse that caused the 82 to behave in this fashion. It appears she has mind of her own. Has anyone else had similar affair? Should I have the unit lookled over by NANA? All seems to be playing and sounding well.

Also, is it proper to have re-plugged on the power strip without first disconnecting the strip from the wall socket attaching its main lead?

I would recommend you contact NANA or Naim Service directly, and be sure to have the s/n of your unit handy.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it does it again.

The micro could have been spooked by an rf pulse, or perhaps stray infra-red signals and despite the separate spur it could still have been mains born.

I've had this happen once to my 82 as well, and powering down by unplugging the NAPSC and replugging it solved the problem. Most microprocessors like to be "reset" occassionally, and I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Catch you later!

My 52 ocassionaly gets spooked by the remote on my Sony TV (usually obscure TV menu commands). It usually recovers if I manually restore the button settings on the front panel, but I have had to 'reboot' the 52 a couple of times when the volume pot wouldn't respond to the remote.

Clifton-

1. Are you using a IR repeater? (Crestron, Radio Shack)

2. Burglar alarm sensors can, from time to time, affect remote operation.

You may also try covering the IR window on the NAC 82 fascia with a bit of Blu-tak as an experiment, before you leave in the morning--if it has changed while you've been away, then it is internal...

All was well today upon the return home. The 02 was playing perfectly through the kit.

Seems a few others have had these gremlins. However, the proposals of RF or remote triggering should most likely change to a different "single" only displayed selection.

In my case it appears most likely internals affecting the microprocessor which made it lit three simulatneous lamps on the upper row and two on the lower.

My unit's s/n 121800.

Thanks to all for their comments and help.

Does any1 know the s/n group that Naim made the change to remote smaller increment change on the volume and balance controls?

I also recall twice returning home, and the lights on the 82 went wild, with several sources selected on the same line. It also needed a reboot.

Do Naim use Windows NT in their preamps ?

Why not just refer to NANA for this info?

Clifton-

Your NAC 82 has the "original" discrete logic-based front panel (no micros here), and likely a POTS/5 board (which uses an IC for motor control, as well as an optoisolator).

The volume / balance speed can be adjusted with the lid off, on the POTS board itself. Please phone us for details if it seems too confusing (there's only one small adjustment trim pot hole on the board).

I doubt you'd need to send this for service at this point.

Hope this helps,
