Hallo,
I use a LP12 with Valhalla board. Can I remove the solid base of the turntable for a better sound or not? Regards [This message was edited by Gram Parsons on Sat 28 August 2004 at 10:36.] |

I prefer the sound of LP12s without baseboards. The only thing to remember though is that Valhallas have a hell of a lot of electrical current passing through their "veins". You will need to be very careful not to stick your fingers underneath while the unit is plugged in! I learned this the hard way once when I was setting up a Valhalla/LP12:].
If you have small children (prying fingers), I would strongly advise against going oing "bottomless" for safty reasons. Mark Russell |

Gram,
It has been several years since I did the comparison, but I remember the difference as being much like the difference you get when you remove the dust cover from an LP12. You may want to compare the sound of your LP12 with dust cover vs. without to get a feel for what I am talking about. I got slightly better separation of the various strands of music and found that the notes started and stopped a little faster (if that makes sense). I guess you could also say that it improved the pace, rhythm & timing as well as giving a little more music with less noise/fuzz. The difference was somewhat subtle and not huge, but was worth doing as it didn't cost anything! You will hear MUCH bigger differences by changing supports, arms, PSUs and cartridges - but they can be expensive upgrades. This is a pretty easy to do, so I suggest that you try it. Just make sure that you remove the outer platter before you move your LP12 to gain access to the bottom screws/feet. If you don't remove the outer platter you may throw off the setting of the suspension springs. Also be careful about tilting the table too much as you remove the screws/feet. If you tilt too much, the oild will spill out of the bearing. I placed my LP12 on a flat surface (table) with only one foot sticking out over the edge at a time. This enabled me to unscrew the feet and to remove the base board while keeping the deck completely horizontal/flat. Hope this helps. Mark Russell |
