I suppose sticking tape around the middle would do, but does anyone have an suggestions on dealing with thin CDs?

I have a couple that make a nasty grating sound when loading on my CD5, and I've noticed the CD spins around under the puck so I figure the spindle area is a little thinner than it should be?

Me too, I'm thinking of taking some back for a refund, as they are not to spec. Talking of which does anyone know the "proper" dimensions of a CD? As to your question, I find after pressing play a few times on the CDX it makes them play eventually.

Paul --

Burn a copy of the offending CD. The copies that I've made NEVER exhibit the spinning problem you describe, on all prices/qualities of blanks. Then the original CD gets taken straight back to the shop.

Cheers,

Tim

I am apparently running into a problem with thickness of cd-r blanks. As my machine is a stand-alone "audio" type (not computer related) I must use "music" blanks, and currently, the only ones my machine accepts are Maxell. Memorex and TDK "audio" blanks reject as "check disc". Frustrating, my Pioneer PDR555RW machine, which has been a workhorse for 5 years, is becoming obsolete because of cheap/thin discs. Price don't matter if you can't use them.

To my knowledge, haven't run into an commercial release cd thickness related problems

The laser of your PDR555RW might be worn out. It is supposed to burn 400~800 disks IIRC. You can have the machine seviced and it should be fitted with a new laser which is not a big deal.

Good luck! - Jun

There was a thread a while ago either here or on PFM, with a link to a site that does little clear labels for the centre of CDs. It may have been audiophile candy, but I'm not sure.

I am well past 400 and probably close, if not exceeding, 1000 copies. Authorized "bootlegs" were nearly a full time job for the unit from 1999-2002.

Would the laser problem be a valid guess if it still works flawlessly with the Maxell brand of discs. I presumed that meant the machine was "fine" and the discs were the problem.

I experienced the same situation with my Pioneer PDR609 (very similar to the PDR555RW) and my Plextor computer CD writer: the laser gradually gets worse and worse...

Does this follow for playback as well? My 609's been running nicely as a player, but has only burnt ~10 CDRs since I got it, used, in 2002?

Frankly, 4-800 CDRs written is piss poor, and I don't think that's of merchantable quality. That might explain why my old CDRW drive on my PC died so young too.

Remove CDs from the CD player when not in use. The rubber on the magnetic pucks then has chance to recover and will grip a 'thin' CD better.
