I searched the archives and read the online manuals, but without success. How do I connect a Supercap to a 72? I see there are two 5 pin output/inputs (depending on your perspective) on the Supercap, but only one on the 72. I presume I just connect one of the 5 pins on the supercap to the 72 and leave the other idle. But which of the 5 pins on the Supercap do I use, and which do I leave idle? Do I need to cap off the one I don't use, or just leave it uncovered? Bear in mind I haven't yet got the supercap (am using a HiCap now) so I am going off the pictures in the manual.
Also, if I am correct in that one of the Supercap 5 pin connections is not used, could it be used to power something else at the same time, say a CD5? Thanks! |

This from Richard Dane when I asked the same question.
quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve, obviously the connections guides are not unlimited in scope - we have covered all the usual connections but with such a flexible upgrade path the possibilities are very wide indeed. While connecting a NAC72 to a Supercap is possible, I can't imagine there are many out there doing so.... For all that, all you need to do is to connect in the same way you would a Hicap. Connect into Socket 1 of the Supercap using a SNAIC5 and then sockets 3, 4 or 5 provide the pre-amp signal output. Will,
My understanding is that a hi-cap and super-cap are only designed to power one thing at a time if they are to remain stable. Only a flatcap(2) can power two things at once. I also have a 72/hi and am thinking of upgrading the hi to a super soon. I'd be very interested to hear your comments once you have the new beast installed. Are you upgrading to a super as a precursor to a better pre amp? Bruce |

This is also my long term plan. I work on the principle that moving up the Naim hierarchy is worthwhile but to get the really big gains you need to jump two steps. E.g. from a 72 to a 52 so a supercap seems a sensible move in that direction.

Yep, that's my plan. I thought I may as well skip the 82 step. I hear that the 72 is a real value for money preamp compared to the 82, but the 52 is in a different league.

Hi , i have been using my 32.5 with 72 boards fitted with my supercap whilst my 52 is out of action , and can say that it sounds remarkable. The mid range is amazing, music has loads of bounce and drive, bass still a bit soft and full (comp to 52) but still brill.
Fantstic for an amp that you can pick up for £200. Whether its value for money in the short term, duno, but if you can move from 72 to 52 i recon it is. David |
