Dear Colleagues,
Following the "555 Display Issue" thread, may I suggest to NAIM, to create a list of possible / reported "niggles", eg. under the FAQ section ? my contribution: "Hand-waving door" I notice, that with display switched off, the hand-waving doesn't work, once a CD has stopped. It works , however, at the start, with display off, but without CD inserted. Hand-waving always (?) works, with display on, once a CD has stopped. "Out-put selection changed mysteriously" ?? ...no sound recently, during normal listening - and this puzzles me most: without touching the remote - sound suddenly stopped. Various panicky actions later ( power down , re-start, etc) checking cables, input selection to the 552, etc: still silence - and one very upset 555 owner later the night, I thought of checking the signal out-put selection of the 555: and indeed , the usual DIN was off and chinch was selected ? How this happened, the NAIM gods alone know Re- selecting DIN: ----and Music was in the air again ! Regards Urs |

Thanks for the info on the hand waving. I have the same problem as I always have the display off. I will try it out with the display on sometime to see if I have the exact same issue. It is an annoying issue.
I have recently had my 555 playing say track six and all of a sudden it randomly jump to another track completely. It did this several times but recently it has not been doing it. |

I suppose the more expensive players are more complicated so there is more to go wrong.

Honestly, a handful of people have minor niggles and all of a sudden the entire production is deemed to be faulty

Not really James, just some guys at Naim with a sense of humour who thought it would be fun to have a bunch of grown men flap their puds at their CD players when there was a completely serviceable remote to hand. O how the R&D team must be chortling at their success!

Dear James N,
I do not think NAIM can be equated with TVR. More like LOTUS. Superb Innovative design , Elegant in its function. Desireable leading to long term brand loyalty. But like LOTUS. LOTS OF TROUBLE USUALLY SERIOUS. There seems to be very many software gremlins in thier products today leading to frustrating unreliability and umpredictable behaviour. I have never owned NAIM but have friends who do and they have many tales of woe and frustration to tell. Just looking at the forum comments leads me to deduce that you guys are REAL LOYAL, and extremely tolerant and understanding. Kind of like LOTUS owners. What you have to put up with because the Product, when it works, really does float your boat. regards David |

I think you will find if it has software it will have problems,it's how the manufacturer deals with it in the end. Also paying more does not mean these "niggles" disappear. I was having a discussion with a supervisor at the Sky problem center and saying Sky Digibox.Sky+ and Sky HD boxes should be better than they are, they have been out long enough. I encouraged her to rely to "whoever" that by now a reliable, better box should have been developed. My call was due to the replacement"refurbished" box fitted on Saturday would not allow more that 30 or 40 seconds of a replayed programme before it locked. This was the 3 rd box the engineer took out of his van before he found one that "worked" or not. I wait as we speak for an engineer o bring me a brand new box, lets see how well that one fares? Re Lotus and TVR it's almost expected that "tinkering" and "fragility" the norm, but when they are working they are superb. Saying that I have heard and experienced plenty of so called "top" names that have a less than perfect score on these issues, Ferrari and Mercedes to name a couple. You don't often hear or see about those though as they are always swept up in a covered wagon. |

Well; for personal experience of Naim and other brands over the last too many years, I regard Naim as having excellent reliabilty, My CD5/FC2/112/150 system gives me enormous pleasure and has been fault-free since purchase. Happily, I lack experience of their repair performance. Ken |

I don't know about Ferrari but I know that Mercedes do have about as many problems as other European car manufacturers, same goes for Wolkswagen and others... Now when it comes to Honda, Toyota, Mazda...problems occurs very rarely As for my own experience with Naim, in 8 years, I have owned at least 15 different Naim gears till today, never had one little problem yet Fingers crossed! The difference between a good company & a bad company is what they do for customers when things go wrong.
My CD555 was new in April 2007 & developed a fault at the end of 2007. Naim offered to send me a new replacement unit as it was going to take them a couple of weeks to repair it, even though it was a minor fault - a dodgy micro switch in door. It's this exceptional standard of customer service, along with legendary sonic performance, which has built Naim's customer loyalty. End of. |
