Dear Colleagues,

My quest for an NAT-02 was successful and it is playing quite happily. Connecting to the cable-antenna system needed some further splitters & adapters, but it worked in the end.

However, I suffer from some frustration: Several of my favourite stations are only available via cable; either their original source/transmitters are geographically out of reach or the programme is entirely cable-bound.
Exactly my two top favourites stations present a considerable interference and associated hissing. Even connecting the NAT directly and alone to the cable wall-socket didn’t eliminate the problem. The common answer to this problem is likely to be: A powerful terrestrial station is contaminating the signal; get better shielding or such, etc…
BUT- and here is the crux of the matter — my Revox B261 presents these same stations absolutely clear, with not a hint of interference, with the same cables ! - And - I dare to add: at a quality of sound, which is highly comparable to the NAT.

Does the NAT-02 have additional internal fine-tuning facilities (for users “technically advanced or brave” enough to open the case and adjust the correct trimmer ..?) Which trimmer would this be ?
Is it a trip to the NAIM Service man ?
Or do I have simply have an insoluble problem ? (I hope not !!)

As I’m new to NAIM tuners I observe also, that it’s not possible to tune-in slightly off the signal peak, as the NAT appears to lock on fully or doesn’t and either goes into mono-mode or looses the signal completely (obviously, I’m spoiled with the magnitude of adjusting features of the Revox)

Thanks for your help and suggestions

Thanks

Urs:

I own an 02 as well and use cable for distant stations where an antenna would not help. I have encountered hiss but it is dependant upon signal strength (on cable). I have tried different attenuators/splitters not to get rid of hiss but to allow connection of other devices to the cable (computer and tv) and have found that these little splitters have a dramatic effect on sound quality and hiss. However, much of the improvement I achieved was by luck rather than by design. I would however try to make sure you are getting the strongest possible signal on your cable. I complained to the cable provider, as my TV signal was also poor at one time and they came round, tested it and made some external adjustments to the cable box outside and it has since worked much better. I believe my problem arose from the fact that I live in an apartment and the cable was split many times. Sorry, I realize that none of this may help your situation.

As for adjusting the 02 internally - I am not aware of any user adjustable devices inside the 02 and suspect that Naim HQ would caution you against any attempt. However contact them to confirm.

Paul,

Thanks for your advice - I may have to go the same path, eg: get the cable service provider to check / rectify the signal quality.
Incidentally, I found one or two stations that I receive rather OK, eg: France Musique and here the NAT really "shines".
Funny enough: on some stations the Naim plays with little hissing, where the Revox has noticable background noise and on other stations (regretfully the majority !) it's the other way round.
Both tuners get the exactly same cable feed!

hi uem
as an ex cable tv engineer get the cable company
in to check signal strength and quality offm
radio stations as some stations are converted
to another frequency this some times adds
noise to carrier causing hiss get them to check
this with there head end engineer.also get them
to fit a tv/fm isolator for you and do away
with the splitters beetween isolator and nat02
se if they will supply a double screend lead
made up with the correct conectors.there are no
user adjustments inside nat02 dont try u could
mess up the alingment
hope this helps

Thanks - Seems to be the way to go.
Im living in a block of flats; the installation may be quite old and indeed needs checking.
