Does anyone have experience with the combination of Naim electronics (especialy 5(i) series) and Quad 21L or 22L loudspeakers? Second question: how do these Quads compare to Spendor S5e/S6e's?

I have listened to both these speakers on naim setups and found in general Quads to be much warmer more congested in the base and slower in the bass.
While the spendors are puncher and time better and are more detailed listen.

I demo'd the 22L's against Intro's and Ruark Prelude 2's. This was on the end of CD5, 112, 150.

My wife and I both found the midband of the 22's to be hard and clinical which was a shame because they look gorgeous. Maybe they needed a good hard run-in?

Didn't like the Intro's at all, the bass seemed overwhelming. We ended up with Prelude 2's which 18 months later we still love.

I don't know if there are any dealers near you but it is always recommended to listen yourself. Your preferences might be very different from mine.

I haven't heard them myself, but the view at the shop on the Spendors is that they're not very good at all. Can't figure why they're getting such good reviews.

Frank.

I listened to the Spendor S6e's a couple of weeks ago (not on a Naim system though). I wasn't impressed. They sounded quite 'thin' to me, and they lacked bass. I'm just wondering whether I should have a listen to the Quads. (As a matter of fact I'm intending to part with my B&W n805's, which I now finaly have agreed to consider too cold and metallic and unemotional... Frown)

Frank,

Am I to understand that you make your purchasing decisions based solely on the "view at the shop"?

All the best,

Bill

Cool Martijn.

So you are keeping the Naim kit then?

A wise decision. Smile

I have just sold a pair of Quad 21L as with my naim system i found the bass a bit too slow ans a bit too much - manily as they are a rear ported speaker and need around 0.5m behind them which i could not accomdate. Nice speaker generally though if you want warmth and excellent finish. The quads worked very wel with my previous michell amps and meridian amps prior to that.

frank,

i know why you and the shop don't understand these speakers but Marco5 has the most accurate idea of the comparison between spendor and Quad. the spendor s5 is a ported design where the s6 is a genuine transmission line and represents a suggestion for people looking to smooth and relax their system. however it's got to be arivas in my opinion at this price.

enjoy.

Frank,

I'm curious to know since you have not heard them - does your shop actually carry the Spendor line?

Another general question: Is there any way to identify those on this board who are dealers?

All the best,

Bill
