The picture is of John "Jonny Nomad" Watson's listening room. He is the leader of the gang at Mana if you didn't know. The TT will definitely be sitting on a glass shelf.

Hey John "Weenie Boy" Channing wink

I think the question may have been about that Reference Top angle iron, which does look a bit shiny in the picture. JW doesn't strike one as the sort to rice-out his own Mana with a chrome finish, but you never know. I still can't get over the fact that the late Julian drove an automatic.

...I believe he has his reference top for the TT chromed; there are a few chromed Mana racks, etc., in existence - I believe Hooch has one, too...

Given "Hooch,s" taste for ricing out anything he can get his hands on, including that Bride of McBride 52, I'll bet there's a VTEC badge somewhere on it.

Not yet, I am still ferrous until the courier decides to admit that he does have a shipment for me from Austria. Right now he is denying all knowledge of it, but I am sure he has it somewhere!

Vuk was right I was asking about the frame of the top mini table ( I believe that's what thery're called ) and looking at it again I can see it looks like its chromed.

There are only 3 chromed Mana Ref Tops in the world - according to JW himself when I met him at the Hi-Fi show in Hammersmith. One in JW's home, one with Hooch, and the other is in New Zealand. JW has also created a couple of brass plated Tops as well.

What are you guys talking about here?

Who cares about a chrome rack?

Look at where he's got his right hand speaker located! What about the speaker height? He's got to sit on a ladder to hear his tweeters.

Difficult to beleive the fearless leader of MANA has his system set up like this.

Am I misssing something here?

I was just thinking the same thing. Putting big speakers in a corner against the wall - no wonder he needs special ironmongery to minimise the bass.

The story you are missing is that with enough Mana under the speakers you can put ATC 100s right up against a wall and very high and still get stunning results. It is why people recommend Mana for those difficult rooms ....

With reference to the decor & system chez John Watson.

I thought that the Mana room at last years Bristol UK show was OTT, maybe even a bit of a piss take.......it was obviously a home from home.

Dozy:

I've got Mana. A 4 tier, a 5 tier and a reference table and 4 soundstages. Mana's got the goods. But.. I don't think any amount of Mana is going to stop the bass boom coming out of that corner, even if its an ATC. I don't think any amount of Mana or any ATC speakers is going to let those tweeters be heard like the were designed to at normal sitting height.

Maybe if we all smoke enough of those big doobies he's got there we'll float up to the needed height for them to be heard properly, but I don't think so.

Mana works, but I've got to say that when I first saw this photo on the Mana Forum I had second thoughs about getting Mana. Kind of flies in the face of conventional wisdom.

As for the Sgt Pepper decor (or is Revolver more appropriate?)...to each his own.

I think he's trying to recreate that "front row at a Black Sabbath arena concert" effect. Just be sure to avoid the decapitated pigeons. Catch you later!

Because the speakers are mounted so much higher than normal there will considerably less bundary reinforcement from the floor.

Moving the speaker into the corner may actually compensate for this to some extent.

It raises the interesting question - could you get some of this famed Mana effect by placing the speakers on a normal three-foot tall stand - this would lean up the bass on any speaker. (What have I started???)

cheers, Martin

I wonder if the listening experience could not be significally enhanced if the main listening positions, say a sofa or an arm chair, were to be placed on a number of soundstages equalling that under the speakers or the electronic equipment. In case of JW's living room this would probably require some (wooden?) steps (also mana'd) similar to those used in libraries to facilitate the access to the sofa or the chairs.
Likewise, Mana could produce soundstages to fit under your shoes to ensure the same (or at least a similar) aural experience when, for instance, moving around at a party while sipping on a
Cosmopolitan.

Florian,

Judging from some of the gear in that room, I suspect the listeners would be floating a metre or two above the ground anyway.

...I have actually occupied a seat in the front row at a Black Sabbath concert, and I can confirm that it was f…(airly) loud, but quite OK for about 2 hours + encores. However, the Mana room at the Bristol (UK) show mentioned by Bob A was at least as loud, but ony tolerable for about 5 minutes. Thus, I conclude that the effect mentioned was not successfully recreated. big grin big grin

(it turned out the Mana people weren't that thrilled either)

Best;

.. hmmm, acording to this man the 'observer' always interacts with what is being observed. I wonder if part of the success of Mana is that they have, in some strange way, managed to apply principles of quantum mechanics to the observer problem and thus produced as close to the sound the observer would hear if (s)he wasn't there (if you see what I mean...)

Hey - it's all relative.

Although Einstein proposed a key idea that eventually became one of the bases of quantum mechanics, he never really accepted its description of atomic-scale systems in terms of only of probabilities. If anyone cares.
