PS: yes singing along is definitely banned!

Why dont you get rid of your wife and pump out your tunes as loud as you like!?!?

Ouch!! Of course I love her (almost) as much as my hifi. So not an option.

Meanhwile Headphone.com is VERY keen on upmarket in ear canal phones, which amazingly can cost £500+ ... small doesn't mean cheap of course.

They'd have make phones that sounded better equivalent priced Stax earspeakers - that is a considerable challenge.

well, after all this, I found some grado 80s on ebay for £50.

compared to my £800 power amp and £1200 speakers, sound per pound is incredible!

They actually reveal more detail in the mid band than do the speakers, but comparatively the sound is kind of claustrobia inducing and a little compressed - maybe the headphone amp; but I won't be selling the neats!

Meanwhile another parallel thread says buy Grado RS1s.

As good as SR-80 is, the good values within a Grado line are SR-225 and RS-2.

Both the RS1 & 2 have a slightly more spacious feel, but all Grado fones are pretty upfront sounding. ( the most laid back one is the GS1000 )

You might enjoy Senn, Audio Technica or AKG more.

Maybe a bit late but never mind..
I have a pair of Grado SR 125s via an Amity Head amp ( German coy ). IMHO the question is not the Headphone ( all Grados are super IMO ) but the amp you pass it thru. Only a home demo will clarify things for you. However, for me , the Grado/ Amity combo sounded better than a 122x/150x/Mordaunt Short P6 combo. Kept the wife happy too Smile

And the source.
Particularly the RS1.
