Dear All
My system is CDX2/XPS2 282/250, with SC2, and Credos. I want new speakers because I want to hear more detail. Which ones are the best for under £5000?
Any help appreciated

secondhand naim sl2 amazing detail,if your room can accommodate them,and a hi-line if you dont have one already.

If you can, get a demo of Zu Druids, amazing detail and involvement with the music, far better than the SBL's they replaced.

They are really singing on the end of my 300 powered system.

Well there are an awful lot of speakers for under 5K and probably as many different opinions on which are best. You're gonna have to find this out for yourself I'm afraid.

I don't want to sound flippant but your question is at best only to give you someone else's idea of what's best. Lots of luck and hope you find what you are looking for.

Stephenjohn, my system is identical to yours with the exception of the SC2. I went from Credos to Allaes and it was a quantum leap up the scale. I'm not sure what a pair of Allaes cost (used or new) but I certainly like mine and don't feel the need to listen to any others.

But as Sir Crispin Cupcake says, "You're gonna have to find this out for yourself"...You could start with a demo of Allaes and see what you think.

a home demo is essential,

now i'm running a pair of Neat Momentum 4i with my cdx2-xps2-282-hicap-250.2 and i must say that i am very, very happy with the sound it makes.

i have never heard those zu druids, but try to get a home demo of both.

Alternatively you could buy very nice late mk2 SBL’s and try them for a while, there is a lot of satisfied owners here. A very nice pair of SBL’s can be purchased for less than a grand.

If you decide you don’t like them they can be resold for the same sort of money when purchased, and so no loss...

But if you do like them, the money you save over an intended 5k expenditure could be used to upgrade your cdx2 to a cds3.

Finding a nice pair of late mk2 SBL´s is not an easy task. I have been trying for a while, to no avail. Buying speakers can be a daunting experience. And when you finally made up your mind, you may find that the chosen speaker does not work well in your listening room.

Thanks for the advice guys, I find it very helpful to read other peoples opinions. I like the idea of second hand, where can such things be found? I looked on ebay to no avail - is it just a question of repeated trying?

I would like to buy new speakers and kudos seem to be very attractive according to forum reports. The problem is I have not any dealer near to make a home demo.

With the budget you have a whole range of speakers are open to you. But if you want a clean detailed and very musical sound then you should try the Kudos C20. If you can push the budget by an extra £250 then try a pair of the C30's as well, they suit Naim gear down to the ground and may well be what you are looking for! Oh I must confess a little bias though as soon as I heard them I had to buy them, they are that good....

Goldfinch - Try Eden Audio in Malaga if you want to listen to Kudos, they may well be able to arrange something even if you are a distance away from them.

Why not have a look at the websites of Naim dealers - they ofen have exdem or used speakers at good prices - in fact one dealer has an exdem maple pair advertised for under the £5k at the moment. And you will get installation and a guarantee too. Competent dealer installation is in my view essential with SL2s, which are fiddly to set up correctly.

I went to my local dealer to hear SL2s, which he is going to let me home demo. I couldn't properly tell what they were like there. First impression was not massively different, which makes me think listening unless at home almost meaningless. My dealer lent me a Hi-Line tho'. Well that's a keeper! I can't believe it made such an obvious difference.

Well, several days in now. I think the SL2s are great. Really enjoyable, lots of detail, not harsh at all [which is what I was worried about], lovely sound. I think I'll buy them.

As another thought, home demo is so different from a retailer's listeniing room no informed decision could be based on the latter.

Many thanks to all, the suggestions gave me hours of interest looking things up and getting more information. I thought the Zus looked interesting but seem to have found what I'm looking for at the first attempt with the SL2s
