Hi,

Sorry, I know this was asked only recently, but how do you tell if your mains lead is a genuine Naim one? What colour is it? Is the plug sealed? Etc.Etc.

Also - is it worth doing the star earthing thing - all leads into one plug - when all I've got to plug in is my 140 and my (Valhalla'd) LP12? Plus a video and a seriously crap Sony CD player which aren't earthed anyway and to which, in the case of the CD player, I never listen

I did a search for the mains lead thread but I couldn't find it.

Thanks,

David

David,
In Israel, Naim mains are black and not seales.
The connector to the wall is not molten. All the other cables I have at home not made by Naim, are one piece from edge to edge.

Arie,

Thanks for replying.

Sorry to question you on a language thing, but what did you mean by " the connector to the wall is not molten?"

All the best,

David

Hi David,

Assuming it's way past Arie's bedtime.... I'll butt-in. I think Arie is refering to a "molded" plug/cord assembly. A one piece job in other words. Regarding your original question, star earthing and plug sequence, the official word on sequence (most of us agree with Salisbury, BTW)is "reverse hierarchy" For example, the plug closest to the wall (or breaker) is your power amp followed by the pre-amp and lastly, sources. It's quite audible even with a system comprised of only an LP-12 and a Nait.

Regarding AC cord identification, contact your National Distributor for cable/ plug identity codes which will be imprinted on your naim AC cords. FWIW, I haven't located a replacement for any Naim supplied Ac cord that sounds as good as the originals supplied by Naim.

hope this helps,

dave

David ,
I couldn't say it better than Dave...

I have many main cables like Naim's for different instruments all are a one piece cables.
Naim main connector (the one that goes to the wall) is a separate element it connected to the cable with a screw and can be easily removed.

In Holland and a lot of other European countries Naims power leads are sealed at both ends and the latest are made by Volex. The cable used is a triple core made by Alcatel. The conductors are stranded and 0.75mm2 (a little less than 18 AWG). Pretty thin, at least for a power amp.

After searching VERY long I've found exactly the same Alcatel cable but with 1.5mm2 conductors (a little less than 15 AWG). I'm going to make new power leads with this cable using high quality Hospital grade plugs & connectors from Hubbell. I'll post the results on the forum in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the replies.
Do UK cords use"moulded" plugs or not?

And should I stuff my lp 12, 140 and possibly my non naim video and cd leads (un-earthed) into the one plug/hydra?

Thanks,

David

PS. I should probably ask Naim this, but I'll wait until they reply to my last email. They're probably busy making things.

Paul,

Thanks for your reply about the leads.

I sent my email again, but in case it speeds things up, here's what it said;

Hi,

I've found somebody selling a Naps for not very much at all.
Could you please tell me,

1. Can it power a 32.5?
2. Can it be serviced/ recapped/ upgraded and if so at what cost?
3. Would it do a better job of powering the 32.5 than the 140?
4. Would I be very silly to buy it and have it serviced, rather than
waiting for - at least - a Snaps?

I presume the Snaps is significantly better or else why would you have
made it?

Thanks,

David
