Just mulling things in my head at the moment.

My existing system is CD5 FC2 NAC282 NAP250 + AV2 NAP175, a bit of a mullet on the music side I know, but my last upgrade was the 282 over a CDX2 as the CDX2 really made no difference to my system when my pre was solely the AV2.

I know the real answer is listen to both, but has anyone been through the same upgrade path and have any inspirational thoughts either way.

My options are :-

1. CDX2 / NAC282 + FC2
2. CD5 + HICAP / NAC282 + FC2
3. CD5 + FC2 / NAC282 + HICAP

I figure if I sell the CD5 2nd hand and manage to pick up a bargain CDX2 then this may cost me only a bit more than a new HICAP2. I wonder if this combination would sound better than the upgrading to a HICAP on the 282. I'm worried that a NAC282 with a FC2 and not a HICAP may be a bit of a strange combination and will not let the CDX2 fully sing through, although I suspect my reservations are wrong and the CDX2 is definitely my next move!

Yes Simon, you got the right answer,IMHO this is the right move to do, Hicap can wait for a while...

I was a very happy CD5/Hi owner who did the audition of CD5/Hi with CD5x/Hi and CDX2. At the end of the day only your ears will be good enough to make the choice, but FWIW the CDX2 now fronts our system. For me there was no going back.
