Well, i've done it ass about backwards again, and have still put off getting a CDX2, instead opting for a good deal on an ex-dem 202. Plugged it in after it having been off for a few hours and its head and shoulders above the 112 (as hoped and expected).

Have a connection question though - My flatcap2 which was powering the 112 is now on the 202 via input 1 (hope this is correct).
A NAPSC which was powering a Headline2 is now also on the 202. This leaves me with nothing powering the Headline - which isnt a major problem as i dont listen to it that much anyways, however can i use a socket on the flatcap 2 to power the headline (if so is that socket 5??) or would i be better off powering the headline via the 202 which i think can also be done (i have a SLIC and did do this with a 112 before getting the napsc)??

Thanks

Craig

FC2 socket 5 should be fine. Not sure if you power it from the 202 or not.

Craig - Congratulations on your purchase of the 202. As a biased 202 owner, I think it is a great preamp and tremendous value for the money. Enjoy it.

I've powered a Headline from a 282 and a 112 so I would expect you can from a 202. I hope so anyway as i've just had to sell the 282 sadly and intend to get a 202 at some point. Guess it probably sounds better if it has separate power supply though. I've been much confused by which power supply on the FC2 can be used for what ie if you aren't using it for a CD5 or a preamp, which one do you use for eg a headline and which for a stageline or prefix. I tried them both ways round and it worked and i couldn't tell the difference.

Regards

Thanks for all your help. I am now powering the Headline via the 2nd power socket on the FC2.

I had a conversation with Adam M from Naim (thanks for your help Adam) and he suggested i swap the Hicap from the CD5 to the 202, and use the first power supply on the FC2 on the CD5, so i am currently trying this (anybody got any experience of this??).

davewhit, according to the manual you can indeed power the Headline from the 202, although my dealer thinks there would be quite some sound degradation (better than wallet degradation though if you want to power a Headline without getting another power supply).

Naimed - in-NY - so far i couldnt agree more, the 202 is a HUGE improvement on the 112, i dont even want to listen to a 282 - that could be really dangerous. Have you made a decission on the CDX2 yet???

Alan, have to agree again. I must admint i am a bearer of little brain, but the manuals relating to what you can power with a FC2 and how could possibly be written better.

Ah well, back to the front room to enjoy some more tunes!!

Regards

Craig

Craig,

Congratulations on your new purchase, 202 is a great preamp and probably one of the BVM in the Naim range.
enjoy it!

This week I saw a HICAP2 going cheap at a dealer near where I work so couldn't resist. I have a NAC282, CD5, FC2 & HICAP2. Over the past few days I have tried the combinations of the FC2 & HICAP2 powering the CD5 & NAC282. To my ears, with my setup, the HICAP2 on the CD5 and FC2 on the NAC282 is the much better sounding configuration. The difference with the better PS on the source instead of the PRE is not subtle either. I don't know what it would be like in your setup but if it was me I'd say the HC2 on the CD5 would be a better way round. I'd say it's deffinately worth trying them both ways round and letting your ears tell you. I for one , would be interested to hear what you think/hear.

Craig - I am the proud owner of the CDX2 - I picked it up some months ago. Yes, it was unsettling paying that much money for a single component, and took quite a bit of saving up to swing it, but I have no regrets. I absolutely love the CDX2. It is an amazing cd player and has brought me considerable enjoyment.

Have done a lot of listening yesterday and today, and must also conclude (for me anyway) that the hicap has to go on the CD5, with the flatcap2 on the 202. The sound just seemed somewhat harsher overall, and less controlled at higher volumes when the FC2 was on the CD5 and HI on the 202.

Naimed - In - NY.

I hope to get a CDX2 sometime in the new year. I am now a bit further away after buying the 202, but dont regret it one bit. I am also installing a seperate main spur within the next couple of weeks, and hope that will bring about improvements.

Regards

Craig

When I had CDX2+202+200, I would say that this "upgrade" was like adding a HiCap to the 202, provided you go for 10mm spurs that is.
