I hope that I have located a second hand 82. Before I arrange to hear/see it, any comments on things to check for?

Also, what servicing costs should I budget for?

If you ring Naim with the serial number they will be able to tell you if it has been serviced and how old it is.

They will also be able to tell you how much a service will cost.

ensure the NAPSC is included, as well as the link bridge for 1st and second hicaps, as well as the usual 5-pin donkle for *cap-less applications. And the usual, such as a manual, and remote, and packaging is preferable.

If no 5-series phono boards, I think pair of line-level links should be present (526??).

On the less serious side of things, make sure it has a mono button, and that the vol and bal position indicators are lit with a Naim-Green led - otherwise it might be a 102 in 82's clothing. Only one level of selectors would be a dead giveaway to a 102 'in drag'

You might want to ask the seller where they bought it from. If a shop phone the shop and ask them who they sold it to and what address they have (they may not tell you the last). If the individual has not moved then you should be able to tie the two bits of infor together and satisfy yourself that it's not nicked. Alos talk to the indiviual about their hi-fi history a bit to see if they seem genuine (e.g. why are they selling it).

Finally, as mentioned above, check with Naim (who are very helpful with things like this) on it's service history and possibly tell them who you are intending to buy it off so they can check with their records. If it is nicked this could allow you to make the real owner and the police very happy.

If this all sounds a bit heavy don't worry too much. I have bought and sold several pieces of kit secondhand and never had a problem but it pays to be careful.

Regards

Ne

one extra tip - when I've bought 2nd hand I've generally asked the seller to write out a receipt specifying the date, detials of the item (incl serial no), my name and the amount. This means you have some evidence for your insurance comapany if it ever gets nicked and also a 'dodgy' seller wouldn't be too happy to do this. Also when I bought an LP12 2nd hand I got the seller add to the receipt that it was sold subject to a satisfactory inspection by my dealer.

Of course ideally you should go the sellers house (no meeting in pubs, etc) then you can listen to the gear and also check that they look like they're proper hi-fi buffs, (lets of CDs etc).
