Chaps

My recently purchased (Ex demo) CDX2 has started to briefly "skip" at random for no apparent reason. It probably skips a couple of times every other CD. By "skip" I mean it garbles a split second or so of music before carrying on as if nothing happened.

Anything I can do or check that might resolve the problem before I go back to the dealer?

Regards

Spock

Bad luck Spock. The only thing I can think of is to try another puck if possible. Good luck with it.

Cheers

Cheers Harry. I did have a close look at the Puck all seems OK as far as I can tell. The skipping seems very random i.e it will not skip on the same track twice.

My dealer is very good so no doubt I will get it sorted but it's a pain all the same.

spock, you can probably adjust the puck that you have right now to reduce this problem. sometimes (not always) skipping is caused by the rubber rings underneath th puck not making true contact with the cd.

with your finger nail, try to turn each of these rubber rings till they look as round as possible -- much harder to describe than to do -- when i did this with my puck, i more or less eliminated skipping.

i recall there was a discussion about this a long time ago -- you might like to do a search using "puck" or whatever...

enjoy

Interesting to hear about your problem with skipping on the CDX2, I’ve had my little CD3 for eight years and it's never skipped once. In fact I only ever had one problem disc, and that was because the centre was of non-standard thickness. I found that the rubber sleeves on the puck were a little flat. I removed them and turned them round and this completely cured the problem. Any how, good luck with it and I hope that you will get it sorted soon – I’m sure that you will!

Deeply.

Sounds like more quality control problems for the cdx2, I really think people should hold off buying naim cds3's, and especially cdx2's until naim figures out what the problem is with their recent cd players.

Greetings Spock

This sounds like some sort of 'mains spike' problem from your description, and frequency of occurence.

A friend used to suffer something similar - it was his freezer switching on/off and sending a spike through the mains.

Try switching off all 'cycling' electrical appliances which could be causing it - fridge/freezer/CH boiler/washing machine/immersion heater/electric blanket etc.

Good luck.

John.

On what evidence do you base that statement mad max?

I and several friends have CDX2's and CDS3's with no problems whatsoever. Naim's quality control standards are up there with the best and I am not aware of any significant problems with their players.

Do you have evidence of problems with players in the States?

I can't vouch for a CDX2 ( all three units had more or less skipping or reading problems and the last unit I had had to go back to the UK for re-build ) but, my CDS3 has been absolutely flawless for oh... last 8 months or so. ( knock wood ) Razz

I would recommend if anyone see the problem with a transport, contact the dealer ASAP as a warranty on the transport is only a year.

J.N.

I just took delivery of a new CDX2 two weeks ago. It had blemishes on the front panel (obviously it left the factory in that condition - quite minor however not to be expected on a $5000 CDP) AND it was completely malfunctioning in a variety of different ways. My dealer came over to verify the problems and a new one was shipped out to me from Chicago. Granted the playback problems could have been caused by damage during shipping, however there have been several recent posts about other quality control problems on CDX2's.

Gregg

PS The customer service from NANA was quite good in that a replacement was shipped out immediately.

I would like to report absolutely no problems with my CDX2.

Not only has it failed to malfunction but it was blemish free.

There is, however, ever so slight a noise when I open or close the drawer and I lie awake nights worrying that the drawer might drop off in my hand next time I open it. Roll Eyes

Back to reality, I have just bought some rubber tubing, to see if it works on the puck, as I would like to go back to my lazy ways of leaving a CD in the machine so I could just start it again from where I was listening previously.

The little rubber things on the bottom of the CDX2 puck are just lengths of rubber tube. If the tube I have purchased works in their place then I can just put in new tubes ever few weeks and not worry about leaving a CD in.

I don't actually think the tube I have got (found during lunchtime wander down town) is quite the right size, but we shall see when I get home tonight.

Steve,

My understanding is that Naim 'do' things to the clamps post assembly that affect the way they sound, so I would not advise disassembling your clamp at will...

Chris.

Apart from possibly adjusting the vertical position of the pins there nothing else to do - unless they have to trim of excess plastic due to an aging die.

It's a bit late anyway, as I had it apart within days of getting it to see what all the puck fuss was about.

If it has made a difference then it is a lot less than the difference between two ball materials in a bearing isolator, since I haven't heard it. I will be careful though, and I'm sure if I screw it up there will be somewhere, not far away, I can hand over my $$$ and get a new one Smile

Just out of interest, how long was this CDX2 a demo unit before you bought it? How many people took it home for home demos etc etc...

I assume that it came with full guarantees like a new piece of equipment? If so and the problem keeps ocurring after purchasing a new puck etc... then I would take it back and complain to your dealer.

With regards "quality control problems" I have had no problems with my CDX2 in this respect apart from a very low crackle noise in one channel when the volume is cranked up above normal listening levels (no music of course). This in no way interferes with my listening to music and have therefore managed to live with this since April this year.

Regards
Mark

Steve

It was slightly smaller diameter but slightly stiffer and a bit more 'sticky'...and it worked perfectly.

Steve,

if the puck is anything like a CDS2 one, then you can simply rotate the existing rubbers by 90 degrees instead.

What was a flattened ring is now a taller-than-normal ring.

Now, put that knife down!

cheers, Martin

True, but now the bow has two strings.
