I am using these with a Naim CD 5/high-cap and Spectral gear. Are these speakers generally toed-in or straight ahead?

Mine are toed in slightly. The instructions say that placement (includung toe-in) depends on the room, so you need to experiment.
The instructions also contain the helpful advice that "positioning the loudspeakers behind curtains will affect the high frequency response" (!). Trevor |

It may take some getting used to but the usual way to setup Dynaudios is straight ahead. In the correct conditions, they give a very wide spread and good depth if setup this way. If they're toed-in, it often gives a quite narrow soundstage and less scale.
If you get bass boom, then they need to be further from the rear wall, the best distance being around 28inches. Regards, |

Frank/Trevor,
Have either of you, or anyone else on the forum for that matter, compared the Dynaudios with Naim's own SBLs? I'm not in urgent need of a speaker upgrade right now, and don't want to tempt fate by doing a home demo of either speaker, but I'm curious about their differences. I have heard SBLs make wonderful music but I'm not taken by their 80's look. Perhaps Naim might create the SBL2 that incorporates more fashionable proportions (e.g. narrow baffle, increased depth, and slightly taller and non-foam grills) whilst retaining all the SBL's operating parameters that work brilliantly. quote: I think you may get some feedback on that concept. No, I haven't done the comparison, as my room is not a good match for SBLs. There isn't a wall against which they can be closely placed. Although some people have claimed that you don't have to have them right against a wall, the first piece of advice offered to anyone with an SBL problem in this forum is: "Get them within 5mm of a solid wall" or similar. I found the Dynaudios to be a great compromise between PRaT, decent bass extension, long term listenability, and domestic acceptability. Received wisdom is that you need at least a 250 to drive them properly, I think there was at least one person on the old forum who found that a 180 didn't cut it.

Hi,
I did compare the Dynaudio 1.8 with my own SBL's after I decided the SBL's were lacking in scale and bass power. You will find the thread in: http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=67019385&f=48019385&m=60819289#050196221 THread is entitled 'Bomb the bass' Hope this is helpful. Jonathan |
