Hello gang
Just thought I would tell you about my Saturday when as my wife took the girls out i had a good chance to listen to my system for a good few hours without interuption. It was a mixed day of fustration and smiles in that some of the discs i ran through my system showed bass and top end inconsistencies. Others were " more like it". Maybe I thought this was something to do with my system more so than the discs due to the fact I hadnt completed a long listening session in a while and my system is not switched on all the time, hence warm up issues. Any way later that evening the girls returned home and my wife asked me to put on a compilation disc of Asian artists where the music consisted of very "happenin tunes and urban asian vibes". I sat down and then was absolutley gobsmacked as what came out of the speakers was fantastic music. Tight bass and top end on each track. Even my wife who usually has no interest in my hifi took notice!! ( as did my mum and two daughters). My conclusion was that although the system had been on most of the day the actual recording quality of this disc was first class and my how this makes a world of difference. I forgot about what the system was doing and got carried away into the music as did my three year old who decided the time was right to do some dancing in front of the speakers ( she hasnt quite got the coordination yet !!!!) I have never really thought of recording issues before but now am going to investigate this avenue more. On Wednesday my local Audio T are having a Naim afternoon / Evening and it will be interesting to see what is played through the cds3/ SL2's . It will be the first time I will be hearing naim so am very much looking forward to it although it wont be a proper dem but none the less. And I will be visiting Leicester in the next few weeks and look forward to meeting Peter at Cymbiosis who has given me his kind words of wisom regarding options as to migrating to naim. I will let you know team!! Best regards Dipak |

Dipak,
take some of your own discs along. You never know, they might feel that you're more likely to dip into your pocket if you get wowed by music that you're already familiar with. cheers, Martin E-mail:- MartinPayne (at) Dial.Pipex.com. Put "Naim" in the title. |

Greetings Dipak;
Your post raises the interesting issue of 'the hot system'. We all know about leaving the black boxes permanently powered of course, but there is no doubt that a long loudish session, really gets your system singing. I had three friends over last weekend and my system was really cooking after an hour or two. 'Cold' the next evening; it was not sounding quite as good. There is of course, also the issue (which I think you may have experienced with your family returning home) of a few bodies 'damping' the acoustics of the room better. I've heard this effect in reverse (i.e. producing a poor, over-damped sound) with too many people in a dealer's dem room. So folks - what's your optimum number of bodies for that perfect sound? May the madness continue. John. |

Hi John
I never thought of bodies in a room having an influence on acoustics but I think its a very valid point. Where my system is the girls tend to have their toys and bits scattered in front and so naturally this is where they play. You alway hear of other ways "tweaking " the room with carpets , curtains , etc . Maybe I should get my wife to stand still in front of the speakers for the day as a starting point for an experiment although I cannot guarantee she will be willing........mmmmm....will give it a go though |
