I came across an old thread with this comment by Paul Stephenson about the case of a CD5
"All the case is torqued may not sound the same again." and "the case torque is 3nm". Like many other some of my Naim is new and some second hand. I therefore don't always know if anyone has opened the case previously. Bearing in mind Paul's comment on the effect on sound quality what are the 'nm' figures for CB and Olive cases and which screws/bolts does it apply to. My Naim boxes are: CD3.5, 72, Hi, 250, plus SNAPS. Thanks Mike |

I would enquire very carefully...you might be eligible for free electric shock treatment .

I thought I heard it all! I won't say it doesn't make any difference to sound, but you're opening a wide open door here. Next thing to be discussed on the forum would be "what is the best kind of cat food to give the cat to make the mids off the adjacent CDX2 richer?".

I recall a Linn dealer once explaining how much to tighten fixings on their equipment: "There's tight, Linn-tight, and there's broken".

From an engineering point of view it makes perfect sense that tightening torques of various screws holding the kit together affect the sound as they affect resonances.
Torque settings are bound to change over time. A Naim version of a torque screwdriver like this one from WBT would be nice. Pre-set on the right torque setting(s). Richard. |

I understand your scepticism but I have heard the difference that the correct torque settings for speakers and my LP12/Ittok can have. Plus it was Naim's MD that said it effected the sound Mike |

Not at all doubting the validity of your comment Mike. Just wondering if we are pushing things a bit too far? We are all obsessive compulsives when it comes to sound quaility and tweaking nut where should we draw the line? Maybe it is different for everybody... Regards |

I am afraid I disagree. It costs nothing to try. We are all in pursuit of the ultimate sound quality. Its just like cable dressing where minor adjustments can pay dividends. Why not get the best from what you have? Julian |

Can't argue with that logic Julian. Regards.. |

Any serious Naim owner has a calibrated torque driver. We need em for midranges and tweeters on dibbles, and the other speakers :-)
Can highly recommend the driver from RS Components at www.rswww.com (search for "torque driver"). You would, of course, get the *calibrated* one rather than the finger-in-the-wind version :-) |

The 3n-M applies to the outer case only - NOT the inner fasteners, which have varying torque settings depending on application.
Also–I'd be wary of using this setting with chrome-bumper gear, as the countersunk fasteners have a tendency to strip or bind against the outer case finish (which totally defeats the purpose, i.e., repeatability and the ability to remove for re-work). |
