Hi all,

A Naim dealer I spoke suggested to experiment with the mains grounding of Naim equipment. They say they got very good sonic results with grounding the mains for the power amp only and not the pre-amp and source(s).

I don't have a clue. Any ideas or experiences?

Sounds like a B.S. alert.

All items connecting to the mains must have earths connected in their mains leads for electrical safety.

Naim kit uses star earthing for signals - could this be what they were talking about?

It's nonsense. Naim has the best grounding system in audio. You'd be well advised to stick to it, both for sound and safety.

MANA - there, I said it.

AARGGHH.... feels like a blade between my shoulders...

I was not talking about the grounding of the components themselves (which is done throuhg the interconnects I believe?) but whether to use grounded mains supply on all components or on some or not at all.

I was just wondering if anybody has done some experiments with this.

The mains ground on mains powered components is there primarily for safety. It connects the case and the electrostatic shield within the mains transformer ONLY. I believe CD players are the sole exception to this rule.

Mains earth should be connected to the signal earth at a single point - this is the only area where a problem can arise (e.g. you use a Naim CD player & a turntable, only one of these should connnect mains earth to signal earth if both are connected concurrently).

Naim's earthing arrangements are very well considered, such that optimum performance is maintained only when used as designed.
