I know they were made in the early 80's but I've never seen or heard one. Can anyone enlighten me?

I believe the correct designation is actually NAB300. It was designed for PA duties rather than hifi.

The power supply is unregulated, a configuration that Naim currently do not think appropriate for any amp above the NAP180.

The NAP250 is supposed to be substantially better.

cheers, Martin

probably the only one on the forum with one. bought mine privately. the nab or nap 300 was designed for broadcasting or pa systems. the letter 'b' is for boadcasting but in tradition with other naim amps most people easily remember it as a nap.

it looks very different from new naim amps, the black fascia has a imprint naim logo not the one which lights like the latest ones. it has the green power light like the old 250. no feet, reckon it was meant to be attached to wall shelves or something. the fascia resembles mark levinson or other usa amps-with handles in front for carrying. it is damn heavy, nearly broke my back when i first picked, it weighs over 17kgs-needs a health warning!!

sound quality-difficult question. i sent mine to naim for servicing (02/00) before i listened to it. i also asked them to configure it for home use which i assume they did. they changed a few old bits and modded it. i have listened to the 250 and wouldnt draw major diffs as i am unaware what power regulation is and what it does. the late jv called it a bloated 140, i disagreed, my ears tell me its better than a 180 but not a 250. it has the bobbin box shaped transformer which i am reliably informed has better bass control compared to the torroidal donut shaped one. it delivers 150w into 4ohms and 75 into 8 i think. have yet to test its current using difficult speakers-i only got intros.

only 21 nab 300swere made and mine is no 10. production was stopped because while naim were making an amp producing 150w, competitors were into kwatts.

sadly due to the severly disabling disease i got (upgraditis) i am selling it to get nap 135s need to get these soon b4 a demanding girlfriend cones along!

regards

ps it has van xlr lead at the back and is fan cooled, will take naim speaker plugs but has extra sockets for professional speakers with 3 pins??
