Mario, great recommendation. I like him a lot but don't have this one - well, it will be on the wishlist now.

My mom played this record all the time in the 70s (wish I still had the vinyl) and now I bought it as an XRCD.

"Esther" - Esther Ofarims ATR XRCD 01
Esther Ofarims (Author), Chamber Orchestra of Munich Philharmonic (Performer)

Like others that have commented the labelling of 'World Music' bugs me.
I guess it's because 'WM' doesn't really mean anything IMHO.
I've found myself avoiding the term, & when someone asks “who's that?” I explain the detail rather than say “it's WM.”

My ears were well & truly opened when I 1st went to a WOMAD festival in 1985.
I attended because there were various bands like New Order, The Pogues, The Fall, etc playing. It really opened up my mind in general & musical interests specifically, & I'm still grateful to 'em.

My favourites, both artist & record ...

Toumani Diabate
Malian Kora genius; if you only have room for one in your collection this is the one!

Ali Farke Toure – Another Malian genius.
Ali took traditional Mailian music & played it on the electric guitar.
His music is famously described by Martin Scorsese as the D.N.A. of the blues with good reason.

Also well worth the money is the collaboration by Ali & Toumani

Sabri Brothers - Qawalli ensemble, so along the lines of Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan and ensemble, but my favorite due to their instrumentation.
Amazingly 'Ya Habib' (image below) is still Real World's best selling record,
although it was released in 1993!

However I do own eight Nusrat records, so here's my pick ...
Night Song - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Michael Brook

Baaba Maal
Senegalese master mixes a fantastic contemporary sound fusing electronic with dance and traditional music.

Olodum aka Banda Olodum
Afro-Brazilian cultural group from Bahia, Brazil.
Afro-Caribbean rhythms and mixed them with the Brazilian samba.
I've seen them live many times, but sadly I've always found their records disappointing,
so can anyone recommend one?

Ayub Ogarda
From Kenya he plays the nyatiti, a stringed instrument reminiscent of the lyre.

'En Mana Kuoyo' on Real World

Shu-De
Throat singers from Mongolia. Like Marmite I'm sure this is a love or hate thing!

'Voices from the Distant Steppe' on Real World

I could go on, & on, & on ...

I will just add the WOMAD festivals are great!
Very friendly, both for children & grown-ups.
Of course an amazing mix of music on offer,
& the line-up this years at Charlton Park event is epic.

I've a very big World collection, probably 50% from Africa. If you want to stick with female voclaists check out Oumou Sangare, Angelique Kidjo.

Bruce

I saw Angelique at the Festival Hall in the mid '90's and she was super. The only time I have seen people dancing in the Festival Hall, along with random members of the audience being invited on stage to join in with the performance. One girl did a faultless duet with Angelique.

A great concert.

For me, Bob Brozman is one of my "World" heroes. He takes the credit for going out there, and tries to understand what rocks the boat in various cultures. And, he's a great Blues artist, too. But then: Isn't Blues just another flavour of "World" ? It has been said, before, here: World doesn't exist, or better: it's all "World" music...

Thats been the problem for so many years.
Here in the UK world music was the USA for 30 years or so .Then in the 70s you could add Jamaca to the list.
Then with the help of Peter Gabriel and Womad we got to hear lots more music from around the world.
And now with the internet, we can now call it all just great music.
Because its there, and all you have to do is press a few buttons to hear it.

Have not seen any VM Bhatt here, his collaborations with Ry Cooder (meeting by the river) and Jerry Douglas (Bourbon and Rosewater) are worth seeking out.

Closer to home Boban Markovic or Fanfare Ciocarlia for a bit of the Balkans and the east of Europe

Nigel Kennedy's disc with Kroke and the Itzhak Perlman's kelzmer discs

From Spain, Radio Tarifa and the excellent Bebo & Cigala (Lagrimas negra)

Souad Massi, Cheb Khaled or Cheb Mami

Swedish acapplla versions of Voodoo chants and a cracking version of Mercy Street, try Amanda - Café Creole

Lila Downs, Llasa, Chavela Vargas (anything from these ladies)

Two volume set derived from the Discos Fuentes back catalogue - Cumbia Cumbia

Africa covered reasonably well elsewhere, with the exception of the two volume Indestructible Beat of Soweto which is a good compilation and starter for broader exploration.

Interesting point biggy!
Isn't all music world music (except invented bands)?
IMHO P.G. named Realworld thus because it's all real music.

Thank you, everyone, for this wonderful and inspiring thread.

T.D.'s Mande is the most refreshing CD I have bought for ages. I am about to launch into his back catalogue on previous recommendations from Forum members, but I am really looking forward to trying some/several/many/all of the recommendations here as well. So that's my CD pocket money accounted for for the rest of the year...Smile

And I toss this into the ring:

Agreed. As I said in an earlier post in this thread. The very idea of "world music" is Western-centric.

Now, music from Jupiter ... that's not world music, it's "other world music"!

All best,
Fred

When these boys played The RFH in 1985 everyone got up & danced.
Sadly The RFH management pulled the plugs when the audienced refused to sit down!
