For the first time in about 10 years there is a new release I can't wait for.

Paul Motian Trio c/w Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell - "I have the room above her", on ECM.

First album for long time by the best group in Modern Jazz.

Colin - I am eager to get this as well - it has got a lot of good reviews and I should be able to get a copy next week.

I notice Stefan has been luck enough to obtain a copy already - Stefan what do you think of it?

Cheers
Adrian

Is this with Frisell in electric or acoustic mode?

Folks,
have received it yesterday, and gave it one complete run, in the evening. Pre-conditions were excellent (which is why I bought it):
  • Paul Motian - one of my all-time "heroes" (what gives me the feeling that every of his records could be his last one ?) Amongst teh most sensitive (yet versatile, AND history loaded) drummers of history.
  • Joe Lovano - those who know me and my Jazz purchases will have noticed that I jump on everything he produces. Hard to keep track, because he's SO productive. One of if not THE most versatile artists on sax, today. And, a wonderful tone !
  • Frisell in electric mode (was only aware of Abercrombie changing to acoustic, lately, but...) - well... combined with the right co-players, he can be a good addition to the game.
  • Avatar Studios - which I believe is one of the best recording studios used by major artists, today
  • ECM (the booklet shows RARE photos of Manfred Eicher...) no further comment needed.

So, what should go wrong ? And, what DID go wrong ? Is it that super heroes have come to age, lately ? Is it that the bonus they have BECAUSE they are history can stand in their way (just like with the latest Pat Metheny CD that I ABSORBED, just to be kinda disappointed) ? Is it because I had "Bebo & Cigala" in the CDP, before and was still touched by this very intense piece of music making ? Is it, because Frisell had only little to "say" ? Or, maybe because I had removed the corner block bass traps, earlier that evening, and was distracted (just to add some possible very trivial reason) ?

Don't know, but measured against my excitement that there was a new CD out with THIS trio, I was not overwhelmed. Yes: Brilliant production, very well arranged, Motian the CLEAR musical leader (interesting enough with always less and less effort from disc to disc), and all, but I've found myself NOT being sucked into the music, caught myself thinking about all kinds of other things (and not following the music), etc.

But then: It's so much a mood thing, and just because CD's arrive, it doesn't mean that you're ready for them, right ?

Will give it some more runs, and am VERY interested in different (POSITIVE, I hope) feedback from you guys !!!

(a little sad and puzzled)
Stefan

I picked up one today and on quick run through I quite like it. Faint praise I know, but it is a little 'unusual' in musical expression so may just need a few more listens.

I really like the new Pat Methany album which has lots of areas I like as well as newer type soundscapes to explore and get used to.

One I also picked up today is the Chris Potter Quartet - Live At The Vilage Vanguard, which to my ears is a delight. If you like hard bop then it is sure to go down well.

Sean.

I like it - missus is watching TV and I am chilling with Senn 650 / Headline 2 / FC2 /CDX2.

Stefan, I understand the comment re Bebo & Cigala but I think it's just a different vibe, not different bad. Give it another go!
