Can anyone suggest any good Traditional Jazz or Dixieland Jazz CDs.
I find it difficult to explain what I am looking for because I don't know, but easier to say that I don't like things like modern jazz and discs like Miles Davies - Kind Of Blue (I know some of you are now throwing your hands in the air !!) but to me they are too many notes played randomly, very clever, but not very tuneful.
Some of the stuff I do like is Artie Shaw, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and such like.
Can anyone suggest any other arists / disc along a similar 'traditional' theme. Also any web sites with examples of such music would be helpful

Thanks

Danny

'The ghost of Philip Larkin on New Years Eve!!!
King Oliver
Ellington obviously, try Samll groups Vols 1,2or complete Blanton Webester Band or Black Brown and Beige.
Basie Band 'Original Decca Recordings'Fletcher henderson 'With Louis Armstrong'Others Jimmie lunceford, Stan kenton, I like verve compilations of Roy Eldridge.

For more modern big band try the excellent Gerald Wilson, then take deep breath and get as many Charles Mingus records as you can!!

The Classics series of releases has a vast array of the kind of material you want.Stocked in all good jazz stores. The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD is my bible and I think you should by a copy immediately. They are very good on Dixie, Swing big band. Sui generis geniuses such as Armstrong, Ellington cant be classified ofcourse.

Look at the relevant music styles entries on All Music Guide. Just kind of click around, suggestions will be forthcoming.

I was going to go off on some neo-luddite rant and then I followed Joel's link and thought , wow maybe I,m wrong nice summaries, lists and endless links, information, recommendations etc. Then I got a grip, and realised that this is nonsense. Lets give real critical, considered work some credit here. The whole point is to have an overview, an explication of this vast body of work, an insight into the last centuries' most important art form (yeah I know!). Forget the internet buy the book!

Danny,

You may like this band, I can highly recommend 'Rebirth kickin' it Live - Mardi Gras, New Orleans 1990'.

The vinyl I have is on the Special Delivery label, SPD1040.

The sleeve notes say it better than I could...

'There was first Louis Armstrong and Preservation Hall, then Dr. John and the Nevilles. Move over, boys, because there are new kids on the block...

This is classic New Orleans brass, a gumbo of Jazz, dixieland and soul, but this stew is spiced with a file of funk...

The Rebirth Brass Band has one foot firmly in tradition, but the other is steppin' to its own tune, and you'd do well to dance along'

The tuba player must have lungs the size of barrage balloons to keep the fantastically bouncy bass lines going - amazing.

Andy.
