I read in this months UNCUT that Scorsese's three and a half hour Dylan documentary is to be screened by the BBC in September. He has had access to 60 hours of 'Don't Look Back' outtakes and Columbia is releasing two-disc set of previously unreleased 60's recordings. I remember reading last year mention of an album of new material due this year. I've trawled all the obvious sites but can find no mention. Anyone heard anything ?
Don't know anything about a new album from Bob, but I just finished reading the (presumably) first volume of his autobiography, Chronicles, and I loved it. Unlike any autobiography I've ever read (simultaneously poetic and down to earth, breaking the bounds of chronology), he creates an atmosphere as thick as cheese, portraits so redolent with vibes it's like time travel.
His account of the making of Oh, Mercy is in some ways more compelling than the album itself. By the way, this account occurs about 2/3 of the way through the book, which begins and ends with the beginning of his career. Somewhere in the middle of the book he writes about his life in music before he started recording.
Very highly recommended.
