I can empathise Stuart;
as a lad I worked backstage in a theatre which had a 'Sooty Show' residency for one week every year. The things I could tell you about Matthew Corbett. Eek

I hope your back is better!

Cheers - John

You ought to post well in advance what gigs you are going to so people can get the wet weather gear in!

Who am I? Bloody Michael Fish? Big Grin

As luck would have it we were spared the worst tonight, weatherwise. The goretex got an outing none the less. Talking of outing, Rufus Wainwright was ok. He is an amusing little scamp but his songs are rather samey and, for the most part, introspective and even a bit miserable. He has amazing vocal range and is a dab hand on the old joanna. For me the telling fact is that the most memorable song was the one he didn't write, "Hallelujah", by his fellow canadian the Blessed Leonard .

To be fair, the tickets were freebies, indicating that the Hampton Court faithful have yet to embrace young Rufus. He's on again tomorrow - I hope they get a better turnout than they did today. I don't think I'd pay to see him again.

20th July at the Sage, Gateshead. SummerTyne - Latin Nights: Mayra Andrade and Antonio Forcione.

I have not yet heard anything by Mayra Andrade, but the description of her being the new Cesaria Evora was enough to get my interest.

Nic

From the Sage Web site:

A sizzling Latin double bill. First up we are delighted to welcome the winner of the 2008 BBC World Music Award in the Newcomer category. Singer Mayra Andrade is the new Cape Verdean diva, following in the footsteps of Cesariá Evora. Her songs paint a beguiling picture of island life served with generous portions of mouth-watering melodies and delicious grooves. Tonight the Cuban-born, Paris-based Mayra performs with her Brazilian band. In the other half of the show is Italian guitarist, Antonio Forcione, hailed as the 'Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar'. The charismatic award-winning performer breaks the mould of most conventional, popular guitar sounds be it in the field of jazz, Spanish, African, Brazilian or improvised music. Tonight he appears in a duo with Brazilian percussionist and regular collaborator Adriano Adewale.

“Andrade’s music sounds like a love letter to her island roots.” BBC Radio 3
“Forcione is to the acoustic guitar what Tom Cruise was to the cocktail shaker!” Roots

Nice one, Howard
You'll enjoy Seth, saw him a couple of months back in Shrewsbury and he was great. Will be seeing him again at the Moseley Folk Festival in August. I have all Karine's CD's as well, just waiting for her next visit to my neck of the woods.

Enjoy!
