Dear Dean,

Thanks! I shall watch out for these! I know Miles Davies, and find his works much harder than old Bach's, but I suppose I kinda spent a long time getting to where I am with old JSB! It is not obvious for a while either.

If there is a live album from the current tour it will be something very special. Vocally much stronger than the recordings on his last 4 albums.

I probably should have got tickets to the Edinburgh gig, but I've been on a couple of slightly extravagant musical trips in the last month or so and if felt a little excessive.

Hi SJB

I stayed up late to watch Len's Glasto set, but they said Len didn't want it recorded, as he had no plans to release a new album - so I think we are going to be disappointed.

Hi Tam

I agree about I'm Your Man and The Future, but still find his first two records to have something magical about them.

George,

If you find Miles a little hard to take don't go anywhere near Autechre or Squarepusher might be a little to out there.

Dear Dean,

I think we are all of us "a little out there" from time to time. The important thing for me is not to take it too seriously when others think I am wrong! Happens all the time in any case! I would be in depression by now if I took it all seriously!

Like the 72 thread in the Hifi Corner. I canonly speak other than as I find, and disagreement is actually more constructive, than agreement, provided everyone gets their say without the temperature rising.

That is what I like about this Forum. Mostly the temperature does not rise too much!

I have some CDs for you! Hint, send me an address!

I agree about the first two albums, though I'm much fonder of The Songs of Leonard Cohen (I love Teachers and Once of Us Cannot Be Wrong, and of course Suzanne), but I'm less fond of Songs from a Room. I think Live Songs (his earliest live album, if I'm not mistaken) is excellent, in particular Passing Through and Please Don't Pass Me By, neither of which show up on any of the studio albums.

I think it's the sense of anger and outrage in The Future that makes it so powerful. I also love the description of America in Democracy as "the cradle of the best and of the worst".

That doesn't really make sense - surely he would refuse to record because he DID want to release an album. It would be more puzzling if he didn't given his recent financial woes.

I would like to add my thanks to Leonard Cohen for his well judged decision not to be filmed by the BBC. Big Grin

Well its page 2 and I think we have our answer. Naim folk are over REM.

I have a few too many REM discs. I loved the early stuff and new adventures in hifi rekindled some interest. These are the discs that still find there way onto my hifi occasionally - the early discs more so but I discovered them later - I only knew the singles at the time of release.

Once you have more than a few discs of any artist it becomes harder to get excited about new releases.

They did write some true classics. "End of the world as we know it" for example. I can still recall my delight when a new friend back in 1995 recited the words out of the blue while we were waiting in the car park of the local blockbuster - I only ever understood 1/2 the words on the record.

Some bands will always be a bit special because of the memories they trigger. Music is all about emotion after all.

Yes, they have already achieved far more than most bands could ever dream of.

As Steve says, I reckon most bands would be happy with the equivalentof a quarter of REMs back catalogue.
