'Folk Hibernia' Fri. 21:00. Traces the Irish folk revival. Looks good, expect lots of Planxty, Bothy Band, Christy Moore et al.

You're thinking of Folk Britannia. This is a new series on Irish folk.

I know that series as well. I thought the Irish one had done the rounds on BBC2 or something. May have been a similar programme. None the worst for that though. Thanks again.

"Documentary which looks at the Irish folk revival of the last 20 or 30 years. 60 years ago virtually unheard abroad and largely unloved at home, Irish music has given the world a sense of Ireland and Ireland a sense of itself, as the country has risen from an impoverished post-colonial upstart to a modern European power. Contributors include Christy Moore, Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners, Liam Clancy of The Clancy Brothers and Shane MacGowan of The Pogues."
Like BigH I think this has been on before, but no problems with that. I'll have forgotten most of the programme the day after I watched it anyway! Steve |

I haven't seen it before so I'll be glued to the set - if it has Christy Moore (wonderful), Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners, Liam Clancy of The Clancy Brothers and Shane MacGowan of The Pogues and the Bothy Band and Planxty - I'll be very very happy. I hope they don't forget the brilliant Altan.
Malky - many thanks for the alert. |

Must set the skybox for this. Once saw Christy Moore in 1983 in Manchester, one man and his guitar, brilliant.

Once spilled a tray full of a round of drinks over 3 of the members of Planxty 10 minutes before they were due to take the stage. Needless to say they were very happy about delaying the start of the gig.

It was too much to cram into one programme. Should have been a two or three parter. Interesting history about the birth of the republic and some superb vintage footage of Planxty all the same.

I agree. It is so variable on these type of progs, some seem to go on forever with nothing and others like this one are too compressed.SWMBO was pleased Micheal Flatley was mentioned, the guy (Ronan Hardiman) who wrote/arranged his music was not. All these programmes seem to be judged on what's missing rather than what's included. Human nature I think. |

I really enjoyed Friday's programme - shame no mention of Altan (or if there was I missed it). I agree it should have been a series. I thought it much more interesting that the Byrds To Eagles documentary they put on; not sure if that reflects the quality of the documentary or simply a personal taste in music. Nonetheless, well done to the BBC for having a go at broadcasting some interesting music programmes.
