One of the best new bands to emerge in recent times in my opinion is E.S.T - The Esbjorn Svensson Trio.
Recent records that they have issued such as Seven Days of Falling, Strange Place for Snow and Good Morning Suzie Soho have gained rave reviews and seem to appeal to jazz and some rock fans alike. In Sweden, their home country, they are even getting their albums into the top 20 album chart - not bad for a jazz trio. Anyway the exciting news for 2005 is that they have a new CD released - Viaticum - you can see and listen to their new CD at www.hmv.co.uk and search for viaticum or read more about EST at their website http://www.dieselmusic.se/est/ If you get the chance to see them live you will not be disappointed. They were awesome when I saw them. Cheers Adrian |

Stefan - I do not recall seeing any EST in your collection - I think it is something you would really like and be impressed by.

Hi Adrian,
E.S.T are a band that I've got into myself only just this year. They're now one of my fav jazz groups. If anyone is interested in their last release, 'Seven Days Of Falling', you can get it with a bonus DVD which has several tracks of them playing live, plus an inteview. I will certainly be getting their latest album when it comes out. Cheers Rick. |

Adrian, Stefan,
It's great to hear someone sing EST's praises. I've been listening to EST for about two years and really love them -- I just popped 'Somewehere Else Before' into the CDP before replying. 'Seven days of Falling" has been in heavy rotation all fall, so I'm excited to hear they've got something new out. Can either of you reccomend a good live album -- besides the SDoF DVD? I've brought both CD's to many a HiFi listening session here in the states and no one seems to know who they are -- that's often the case up here, epecially with seemingly esoteric Swedish jazz. Cheers, daniel |

I will give them a more serious try, then.
Must admit that I was reluctant, mainly because they were amomngst all the other A.C.T. label issues, and I lost overview with the huge offer ACT is pushing onto the market. They played in Darmstadt this year, and it was sold out, and had raging reviews, all good reasons to dive into them... What would be your top 2 EST recommendations ? Oops, forgot that it's xmas evening already in Oz... Happy Holiday, Adrian (and to all other thread readers, of course...) Best regards, freundliche Grüße Stefan |

Stefan,
Happy Christmas to you from a wet, warm and thundery Sydney - keep having to turn my system off which is very frustrating!! You should make sure you see them live - it is mind blowing - or was when I saw them in London. Here are the next dates in Germany. 15.4. D - Stuttgart Theaterhaus Esbjörn Svensson Trio 16.4. D - Mannheim Alte Feuerwache Esbjörn Svensson Trio 17.4. D - Kaiserslautern Kammgarn Esbjörn Svensson Trio 18.4. D - Halle Oper Esbjörn Svensson Trio 19.4. D - Berlin Columbiahalle Esbjörn Svensson Trio 20.4. D - München Muffathalle Esbjörn Svensson Trio 21.4. A - Wien Wiener Konzerthaus / Mozart-Saal Esbjörn Svensson Trio +43-1-242-002 22.4. D - Nürnberg Opernhaus Esbjörn Svensson Trio +49-180-22055 23.4. D - Düsseldorf Tonhalle Esbjörn Svensson Trio 25.4. D - Münster Jovel Esbjörn Svensson Trio 26.4. D - Hamburg Musikhalle Esbjörn Svensson Trio 27.4. D - Bremen Glocke Esbjörn Svensson Trio 28.4. CH - Zürich JazznoJazz Festival Esbjörn Svensson Trio +41-900-800-800 29.4. CH - Bern Theater im National Esbjörn Svensson Trio +41-900-800-800 30.4. D - Frankfurt Mousonturm Esbjörn Svensson Trio They have a good back catalogue which is great because if you get into them you will have lots of choice. I would recommend Seven Days of Falling, Good Morning Suzie Soho, Strange Place for Snow and from Gagarin's Point of View - probably in that order but pretty difficult to split them. There is also a very good live DVD. Give it a good go as it is very rewarding and exciting. Enjoy. Cheers Adrian |

Daniel - There is no live CD of their recent stuff but there are is a live CD called EST Live 95 that is available - not sure if it is released in the US but you can get it from amazon in the UK. If you want the recent stuff it is the DVD for now.

Stefan,
I'd definitely check out 'Seven Days of Falling' first. The only other I own is 'Somewhere Else Before,' which I like but may not be the best starting point. In comparison to SDOF, SEB seems like they're still finding their sound. I find that their studio recordings can really build in momentum, much like a live show, so be sure to give the whole CD a good listen. Also, I saw on the System Pic's thread that your demo-ing the Shahinian Hawks -- EST will give you a good sense of the their (the Hawks') piano capabilities. Adrian, I'll be off to get your second two rec's today. Thanks. Cheers all! daniel |

Daniel - I thonk you will find that Somewhere else before is a compliation of tracks from several of the albums I have recommended so you might recognise the odd tune.

quote: That would explain that 'still finding their sound' quality I sensed. I didn't know it was a compilation. I picked up SPfS and Live'95 yesterday, and hope to listen to them today, that is, if my 7 week-old daughter permits me to. cheers, daniel |

EXPAT I would be interested to know where I go to buy EST in Australia. I couldn't find it in the HMV catalogue. Is it an import?

Lomo - a little hard to find in Australia.
My recommendation would be to buy from the UK - www.amazon.co.uk and get them shipped down - they take the sales tax off the prices you see (17.5%) which covers the extra shipping costs. CD's arrive in a week - I use them all the time and it is a very good service. The other thing is that they have the full range of EST and their new one Viaticum is at a very cheap price. Enjoy if you get them and would be interested to hear how you get on with them. Cheers Adrian |

Thanks Adrian for the very quick respose. I' ve had a look at the site and it feels first rate, will let you know how I get on. Very lazy afternoon here in Cairns, avoiding the humidity is half the battle.
Thanks again, Lomo |
