Today, R3 reminded me about this impressive, touching work. While I listen to a fair amount of Strauss, I hadn't heard this piece in years. I don't know why I've never picked up at least one recording. So, while the iron is hot...
can anyone suggest a shortlist of performances? (Any other Strauss favourites?)

Thanks in advance,

Stewart.a

You could also do much worse than Klemperer's version on EMI with the Philarmonia - don't know if it's readily available now.

Stewart-I love this piece of music too. The best recording I ever listened to was conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. I owned it at one time as side 4 of an English EMI pressing of Mahler's 5th (or was it the 6th?). Very moving performance, good sound too! Has anyone ever seen this on CD?
