Good ol' Herbie Hancock - Cantaloupe Island

The 1962-1965 stuff on Blue Note. Not really an audiophile pearl, but - roarrr ! - does that swing !

Hi all, and…greetings from Down Under.

Usually I dedicate a week of listening to every one of my favorites. This time is Ron Carter’s turn and I have put aside a stack of CDs comprising:
· The Bass And I (Blue Note, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder)
· So What (Blue Note)
· When Skies Are Grey…(Blue Note, recording and mixing Jim Anderson)
· Stardust (Somethingelse, rec. and mixing Jim Anderson)
I listen mainly to Jazz music and I’m quite picky not about the performance but the sound quality as well.
I can recommend you all the above recordings. They are all closely micked and above all Jim and Rudy posses an exquisite taste in capturing the warm and athmosphere of such performances. They all will make your system (Naim or whatever) sound GREAT.

Happy listening,

George

Hi George, and welcome to the Naim forum (nice entry, the "Music Room"...)

If you have your "Ron Carter week", I'd like to recommend to add the more recent

Joel Xavier & Ron Carter - "in New York"

and

Rosa Passos & Ron Carter - "Entre Amigos"

to your pile.

Both are duet recordings of the finest sort, and show that Ron Carter hasn't just continued to do the things he's always been making. Excellent recordings, too. Both.

Unless you're into pre 70's recordings, only, of course...

cheers
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Many thanks for your recommendations! Indeed, “Entre Amigos” is on my short list. I have just purchased Tord Gustavsen’s second release: ”The Ground” It is magic; a bit more tempo than “Changing Places” though but, overall, a class act.

Best regards,

George

Just been listening to Paul Simon - Graceland.

Up next, Mahler 5, leonard Bernstein and the VPO (because there was an interesting piece on it in gramophone this month).

Can't agree more, George. Tord Gustavsen was playing live in Mainz, yesterday evening (30 miles from where I live), but unfortunately, I couldn't go...

Now playing:

"My Funny Valentine" - Miles Davis in concert on Vinyl, recorded in 1964 w. George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams. (Columbia)

Before that was listening to :

"Moonstruck" - Chris Jones. on CD in a 2 CD box with a much earlier session of his called "No looking back" Excellent acoustic guitars and bass against a pleasent voice.

I love that disc. Have you heard the recent Columbia box set (Seven steps, I think it's called), as that has the concert in its full, original running order.

Tam...to be honest I am an occasional Miles fan. I expect the box set is very good but a bit too much Davis in one go for me.

Renee olstead -with the enormously creative title "Renee Olstead".

She's just put her camel to bed and made a better job of it than Minnie Ripperton!
