Jenna outside Zenas restaurant in Barnstaple in the rain. The awnings kept us and the equipment dry enough to enjoy another great session!!

Saw KD Lang on the box just after she recorded Hallelujah and to put it mildly the performance was sensational.

She was that into the song she was on her knees singing it at one point. Stunning.

Yes indeed. I've noticed at gigs recently people have got into the habit of lobbing plastic glasses with dregs in them towards the front of the crowd.

Prom 50 today some bloke playing with a big organ.
Some how thought it would be louder somehow, but most enjoyable.
Such a polite audience no one whistled and cheered when they recognised T & F in D minor.

I was at that gig and I loved every minute of it. The castle was a stupendous backdrop (especially after they lit the fires on the rampart) and where I was sitting at least - you see out over Leith bay - fabulous as the sun was going down. Not many left early where I was sitting. I thought his voice was superb - I thought it might not have carried an open air venue but no porbs there - and the band were great. I loved it so much I bought tickets for the Glasgow gig in November - closer to the front though. I think the lack of a large screen was somewhat problematic and he did tend to mess about with the tunes too much so bare accoustic tracks were missing really. Overall, I was chuffed to have seen the great man before he dies.....

Should point out that they're not my piccys. Just some I googled up. But they do give a feel for what the visuals were like. A major step forward from anything I've ever seen before. I think the sound quality was actually slightly below what I remember from seeing them in Sydney 4 or 5 years ago, though. Still great. all in all a truly astonishing experience.

No-Man Bush Hall London. Their first gig in 15 years. Sweltering hot. Some excellent tracks spanning across their complete career. The show was recorded for DVD. I got the impression the band were not 100% happy with their comeback gig although all the fans were.

Me and Mrs Lontano met up with DenisA for a very enjoyable night out.

R.E.M. at Twickenham Saturday 30/08/08.
A good concert spoilt by less than great sound. They were better than the Editors as I could not hear any words, but I don't know their works so could not "fill in".
REM did a good set, Mike S was in good form with plenty of political comment.
Overall B+. Train service on return Z- "track failure" at Twickers "man coming to fix it can't get through the crowds and road closures" so we were back in Egham at midnight instead of 11 o'clock so not too bad just as well it wasn't raining.

The visuals were amazing though. I'm not too fond of these huge gigs. It was pretty much like a big, loud DVD playing and if the tiny people on stage had been REM lookalikes I wouldn't have known.

I would love to see them in a small venue again - not likely to happen I guess.

Can anyone explain why some people pay £50 for a ticket and then just shout to each other in voices the multi-thousand watt PA cannot compete with?

A mystery to me too, if you want to chat just meet in the pub or cafe. Also I lost count of the number of times I had to get up to let in/out people getting drinks and then later going to the toilet.Such a contrast to Albert Hall last week people managed to stay seated for a whole hour.

Lots of great music on this week in New York and I decided to try John Zorn and Lou Reed - Greenwich Village.

Having never seen either gent I thought I would give it a try knowing that it would be either very tough or outstanding.

Afraid it came down on the very tough side, lots of tuneless distortion on guitar and sax. Piercing noise at times that hurt the eardrums. I decided to call it quits and save my hearing for something more pleasurable.

Will try something else tonight.

Tonight a visit to my favourite jazz haunt, the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village.

A tiny, run down club, the history of the place is plastered all over the walls. The legends that have played there make this the holy grail of jazz.

Tonight, three modern day jazz legends - Paul Motian, Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell. Fascinating trio interplay of the highest syandard. The guitar work from Frisell was fascinating.

A good night of music.
