I love her! Back to Black is a brilliant record. Frank is good, but B2B is much better IMHO. Sadly she has been has been patchy live IME, but from recent news reports it sounds like she's on the road to recovery

I can't get Winehouse at all - there's are loads of really great female singer/songwriters around - Basia Bulat, Kate Rusby, Rachel Unthank, Karine Polwart, Laura Cantrell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Kate Walsh, Katie Doherty, Lisa Knapp, Eddi Reader, Christine Collister, Martha Tilson, Jenna Wills - and then there is Amy Winehouse, she is not for me, I'm afraid.
Sorry, if this was meant to be an appreciation thread.

Wolf2 Her Back to Black album is sensational both as a pop album for the masses and for the cognoscenti. It is my favourite album of last year and gets better with each listen. She had a genius producer in Mark Ronson too. I agree with 555 that 'Frank' was good and showed she had great potential but not to this level. She is possibly not that well liked in this country in some ways because her every movement is watched and analysed by the press. It is akin to the problems Britney has in the States where she can't move for 'scrum' sticking cameras in her face. It is fair to say her life has been a car crash or more like, a train wreck. She seems to have got back on track since her husband has tootled off to jail but don't hold out much for her when he is released. In my (prof) experience if you have a partner who is involved in heavy end drugs it can be hard to separate yourself from that particularly if you are drawn to that culture.. Clearly there is also a lot of disposable income floating around too which won't help. IMO, dump the husband and go out with a 'decent sort' and she may be on the road to recovery rather than.................................... Regards Diccus

I don't have the money to chase down all the latest singers, tho I guess that's what the internet is for, to test their music before you buy.
the singers I like are Ella, Sarah, Etta, Emmylou, Allison K., RLJones, and don't forget Joni. Definitely old school.
I wasn't impressed with the divas on the Grammys, too much flash. I know there's a whole music scene you have we don't get much exposure to over here.
I can see why someone wouldn't like Amy's sound, it is aggressive and can be irritating. I bought it south of LA and played it in the car driving home. It went around 2 times and I was glad to turn it off and go to classical.

Shame about her personal life and the fact she seems to generate more publicity for this than for her music. She might be more appreciated for her music else.

On vinyl, Munch? I have the album on CD (for the car) and on UK vinyl. I'd be interested to hear what the US import is like as the Brit one is still poor to my ear. Mark

Or UK to US pressing. Somehow I think it will be a struggle to find a good recording of this anywhere. Someone posted a link on here to an argument that was raging on her website over the same issue. The guy who was complaining was made to feel 'persona non grata' for raising the subject, whilst her fans were incredulous at the suggestion anyone should think it was a poor recording. It just goes to show what people will accept for sound quality these days and is a shame as this apathy or, more likely, ignorance will make good recordings a rarity. Mark

How strange!!! I was thinking I really ought to buy Amy's Back to Black album so I have ordered a Japanese copy from CDJapan yesterday. I will report on the sound quality when it arrives.
