Hi George
Kevin Coyne was born in Derby in 1944. His first job was a social therapist at the Whittingham Hospital in Lancashire (1965-1968). In late 1968 he moved to London, starting work for the Soho project as a counsellor for drug addicts in 1969. This work was a source for many of his early songs (Case History) and remains a major influence today.
In 1973 he signed for Virgin and made some eleven great records. The best of which, in IMHO are Dynamite Daze and Marjorie Razorblade. He recorded with Andy Summers, Zoot Money and Carla Bley (Silence) and Dagmar Krause. He also did theatre work and appeared in two musicals which we wrote: Babble and England, England.
Unfortunately he became an alcoholic and had a nervous breakdown in the early 80s. He recorded some rather less satisfying albums during this period. However, in 1985 he moved to Nuremberg. Started a full recovery and formed The Paradise Band with some German musicians. He quit drinking and made around ten albums; of which I'm only familiar with the excellent Knocking on Your Brain.
I don't know if Dynamite Daze and Marjorie Razorblade are available on vinyl, but they are easy to get on CD and are both better albums IMO than the Siren records, which are stll very good. Case History is up there with those two and is KC's third great album.
I saw KC live at Rainbow (End of The Rainbow) concert - he was disappointing as he, like many of the other performers and Mr John Peel, had had rather too much of the red wine - none of which was shared with the audience. The only act that kept it together and played a great set were Hatfield & The North. I've heard KC on many Peel sessions so I know he could perform live and sound wonderful - I just picked the wrong time to see him.
So if you want to investigate more KC then I recommend Dynamite Daze - Kevin's reaction to punk rock. The album starts with the line: I know the Pope is too old to rock n roll, I'm quite aware that he's got no soul and for the Punks he sings Seen it all, seen it all before. It is not a punk rock album and contains a stunning version of Take Me Back To Dear Old Blighty, but is a great slab of vinyl that oozes class.
Enjoy Case History, which is an excellent record from a great artist who sadly is no longer with us.
