I was listening last night to a CD called 'where have I known you before' which I think is very good - can anyone recommend any others by CC and return to forever.

thanks

I do have a CD called 'Beneath the mask' which I don't like as much and also a solo cd called 'Impressions' which is somewhere between the two enjoyment wise.

Impressions, eh? Where did you get that? I had a double Blue Note LP years ago that I cannot find anywhere on CD and it might be something like that one. Want to swap it?

If you like the Return To Forever stuff - then my personal fave is Mo Mystery, but there is also Romantic Warrior. Both of these are great toe-dippers. There is a new Chick Corea album out that I got at his Barbican gig pre-release, but it's not up to scratch unfortunately.
I would recommend Now He Sings - Now He Sobs, but if you don't much like the solo acoustic piano stuff, then you probably wouldn't want to go there.
Lenny White is just a magical drummer - one of the all time greats IMO.

I got impressions years ago (don't remember where from sadly) - I do like it, just not as much (as yet) as the return to forever CD.

I guess that's a no to a swap then!

I'll check out some other stuff, Stanley Clarke seems to be a pretty mean bass player too!

It's strange how many CD's I've got that I've not listened to very much, which is good in some ways, bit like getting a new CD collection!

Hi Fisbey and Rasher
I’ve got the Return to Forever album from the 70’s Romantic Warrior which I think is great, if a bit frantic in places, but the musicianship is outstanding:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00002DEBW/qid=1097227234/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_11_2/202-9562576-6097419

And one of his latest, which I’ve been playing a lot, the drummer is incredible and sound quality spot on as well.

Rasher you’re right about Lenny White, tight or what!

Fisbey,

As Rasher and Martin have pointed out, the big three RTF albums are "WHIKYB", "No Mystery", and "Romantic Warrior". The earlier and later ones have their moments, but do feature some truly ghastly singing.

In the same vein as these, the Chick solo album from around that time "My Spanish Heart" is very good as is his solo piano effort "Children's Songs". The latter is very much in the same style as the piano interludes on "WHIKYB".

The Stanley Clarke solos (at least the first few) are very good, and I liked the Al DiMeola albums at the time (sadly they haven't worn well IMO) but perhaps surprisingly the best solo effort of the other RTF members is Lenny White's "Venusian Summer". It's a little gem - hard to hear any samples before buying, but the excellent Amazon Marketplace seller Caiman are flogging it for £8.25 plus something like £1.60 for postage from the US.

Just click on the "Used & New" link.

"Crystal Silence" with Gary Burton (from '73, I believe) is one of my faves. Diametrically opposed to the RTF stuff (which I also like, esp. Romantic Warrior).

Martin D,
the syntax of it goes like this:

{URL=http://www.Martin_D.com}Martin D's web page{/URL}

-where the first bit is the actual URL
-the second bit is how you want the link to read on the page
-and all {} are replaced by [] (if I'd used [] in my example, it would have shown up as a real link)

The "Instant UBBCode" URL button on the reply page will take you through this in two easy steps.

best,

Jay

There is no justification for avoiding Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, one of the seminal cornerstones of modern jazz piano.

Plus, it's not solo (I know you know that, I'm just clarifying for Fisbey), with Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums ... a very energetic set of melodic groundbreaking music.

Yeah Fred....I mean Acoustic..but, well, you know what I mean. Some of it is solo...especially the intro & outro pieces that have him removing dead flies from inside the piano Smile
While you're here - I'm really looking forward to your new CD.

This is the whole point of this place - to reduce everyone else to the same level of addition as the rest of us.....

Which ones did you go for?

Return To Forever also included Al Di Meola on Guitar. Check out his solo albums,

Elegant Gypsy

and Casino

there are well worth your time and effort.

Stanley Clarke solo albums are also checking out. In Particular "Schooldays" and "I want to play for you".

"Rock N Roll Jelly" on "I want to play for you" is brilliant.
