If you were given the task of making a compilation album that gave others an insight in to your taste in music then what you would put on it. Assuming you can get around 70 minutes (1 CD) playing time, I'd put
01. Nottamun Town - Shirley Collins 02. She's Not There - The Zombies 03. Hello Goodbye - The Beatles 04. Save My Soul - Wimple Winch 05. Bike - Syd Barrett and the Pink Floyd 06. We Are The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks 07. Jackie - Scott Walker 08. Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival 09. The Shield - Deep Purple 10. Who Knows Where The Time Goes - Sandy Denny and the Strawbs 11. Song from the Bottom of Well - Kevin Ayers and the Whole World 12. Cunla - Planxty 13. The Model - Kraftwerk 14. The Medium Was Tedium - The Desperate Bicycles 15. You Sold The Cottage - Martha and the Muffins 16. This Shirt - Mary Chapin Carpenter 17. Everything's A.O.R - Half Man Half Biscuit 18. I Was A Daughter - Basia Bulat 19. Sorry - Karine Polwart 20. Sinfonietta - Leos Janácek, Wiener Philharmoniker, Charles Mackerras and of course there is a lot missing, but I think it would give some insight to my musical preferences. Probably could do with some Third World War, Traffic, ELO, ELP, Marriott, Chas n Dave, Clas, Manilow (?) and McCartney (but the memory was almost full). This was inspired by excellent SHM compilation that munch made me aware of - only duff tracks (IMO) were by Kiss and The Style Council. Anybody care to have a go. ATB Rotf |

Maybe it is me but whenever I make up compilation albums (like I used to for the car for instance) I find them strangely unsatisfying. Rather like 'Best of..' compilations I almost always prefer the albums of origin.

Difficult this. I agree with you Bruce; I've made up umpteen compilations for the car but they just don't work as well as they should, do they?
OK, here's mine (assuming you can't use an artist more than once) :- “Steppin’Out” – Joe Jackson “Sunshine of Your Love” – Cream “So What?” – Miles Davis “Night and day” – Ella Fitzgerald “Riders On the Storm” – The Doors “The Great Gig in the Sky” – Pink Floyd “Conquistador” – Procol Harum “Willin’” – Little Feat “Keep Your Distance” – Richard Thompson “Somewhere” – Tom Waits “So Far Away” – Carole King “Real Real Gone” – Van Morrison “Love or Confusion” – Jimi Hendrix “Wichita Lineman” - Jimmy Webb “Nightswimming” – REM “Dazed and Confused” – Led Zeppelin “Benedictus” – The Strawbs “While You See a Chance” – Steve Winwood “We’re All Alone” – Boz Scaggs If I repeated the exercise in a couple of hours, it'd probably be different... |

Tony That is an amazing list. I would listen to that for days. Although I am a great Jimmy Webb fan, I have never heard his version. What album is it on? Just to amuse (myself probably), I have made an alternate take of your tasty list that has inspired me to think of songs from the same artists that I would put on my compilation... Different for Girls - Joe Jackson I Feel Free - Cream Well You Needn't - Miles Davis Mack the Knife - Ella Fitzgerald Light My Fire - The Doors Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd Simple Sister - Procol Harum (Whiter Shade of Pale is just too much Big Chill for me) Time Loves a Hero - Little Feat Uninhabited Man - Richard Thompson Ol' 55 - Tom Waits Up On the Roof - Carol King Cypress Avenue - Van Morrison If Six Was Nine - Jimi Hendrix (for a jolt of energy) Met Her on A Plane - Ian Matthews (Jimmy Webb) -or- By the Time I Get to Phoenix - Isaac Hayes Sweetness Follows - REM Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin Dear Mr. Fantasy - Steve Winwood (well Traffic, but he gets the credit) Baby's Callin' Me Home - Boz Scaggs (off the "last days of the fillmore" album) John |

Ahhh! A man with similar tastes to myself!
The Jimmy Webb album is "Ten Easy Pieces", a work of sheer wonderment and gobsmacking wonderfulness by the man himself. Highly recommended!!! |

Always thought this was a fantastic album and great to see a track from it featured. I think I'll play it next. Lots of good choices BTW. ATB Rotf |
