Got an email from fminor.com today giving me this heads up ...

We just received an update from Rhino on the progress of the Doors Vinyl Box Set. They have spent the last couple months cleaning up the tapes to ensure this will be the definitive pressing of these historic albums. Jac Holzman (the founder of Elektra Records) and Bruce Botnick (the original Doors producer) have been hard at work in the studio. With the assistance of Mastering Engineer Bernie Grundman (who actually mastered the original albums and still has all of his original mastering notes!), they have transferred the original analog master tapes through Grundman's all-tube console and all-tube cutting lathe. All the parties concerned with this project (and they are all taking it very seriously!) feel that this approach has allowed them to get the very best sound transferred to the lacquers.

I'll be sticking to my Rhino HDCD box set which is sonically brilliant,
but I thought the boys & girls who are into the black stuff might like to know ...

It's the Perception 40th Anniversary 6CD + 6DVDA Boxset.

The original 2006 release is long sold out & has more elaberate packaging.

However Amazon.com seem to have both the UK & US at the mo'.

It was re-issued in 2007 & is available from amazon.co.uk. It is also on Rhino,
but the amazon details don't say it's HDCD so I'd check before buying.

According to amazon.com it's also going to have another release in Oct 2008
& is on pre-order, but again doesn't say it's HDCD.

Cheers - John

My box came today, No.867.

I have all the DCC lp's and so it was exciting to compare this box set.

First of all, all 7 lp's are perfectly quiet from the start of the side to the end.

Next the DCC comparison.

Obviously I've not had a chance to compare all tracks yet, but the main differences I've noticed are that the DCC's generally have more bass and are a little smoother.

The box set lp's are a little livelier, a bit brighter and have more separation between the instruments.

They sound very good and I'm happy with the sound. Whether I like them better than the DCC's is another question which will only be answered in due course.

The main point for me is that they have detailed resolution and sound well mastered

For GOD'S sake PLEASE tell me these vinyl issues are NOT the crappy remixed versions like the recent Rhino CDs?

I just got rid of all the Doors CD reissues because I can't stand the mixes. At least the 1980s WEA issues I have sound musically right even if sonically not the best...

Anyhoo, am in the States in September so might go boxset hunting while there. Defo intend to get some Sundazed vinyl including the mono "Surrealistic pillow" issue Smile

Don't forget only 12,500 copies available so not sure how long they will last before they sell out.

Accoustic Sounds - their website says their initial allocation of 350 sets has already been reserved - they expect some more in the summer I think

I got mine 2 days ago no.24xx or thereabouts.

Very impressed with the packaging. Although I do not have any of the Doors' vinyls other than the MFSL 1st album to compare with, I must say that the sound is a tad on the bright side but very involving. The surface noise was rather apparent especially on the mono LP of the 1st album. Will clean it and see how it goes.

Since I don't own any other Doors LPs other than the 1st and the LA Woman CD, I have to say that this is indeed a must-have.

Very annoyed with Accoustic Sounds!!!

Prompted by this thread I checked the status of my order for this placed in March 07. It just says rejected because my credit card is out of date.

They did not bother to contact me to ask for updated details so I guess I will have to wait until the Summer (and I suppose pay the higher price)

I'd give Fminor a call Rich.
If they still have stock it'll be much cheaper than AS.
