Sent to me via the Rough Trade Album Club and though the sound quality is not that great its a tuneful piece of modern Electropop you've probably heard a few tracks as backing on TV and of course if you listen to certain commercial radio stations.

This is what POP MUSIC SHOULD SOUND LIKE intelligent and quirky. Just need better reproduction standards please.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Wonderful intelligent poignant lyrics, deep voice showing limited emotion Ian Curtis like?), military drums, indie/rock guitar - fits together like a glove.

Oh yeah. A great, integrated, emotional, emotive, varied, yet balanced set of songs. And one of the most dynamic pop recordings I have heard. A good one to use if you want to demonstrate how compression is killing a lot of modern recordings. One of my favourites of all time. Sharp and fresh as the day it was released.

Worth it just to listen to Steve Gadd and Jeff Porcaro on drums!

Have you bought her anthology yet? Its on Rhino, best sounding IMO. Winker

Oh yes, bought it on release. Haven't particularly noticed the sound quality but obviously quality tunes Smile

If you are enjoying The National: Boxer have you discovered Midlake: Van Occupanther? It is very much in the same in mould. The National's: Alligator is not too shabby either.

But why the modern Lord of the Flies cover?

Seriously Toumain Diabate's Mandi Variations has been sublime, along with Raising Sand by Plant and Krauss.

Also the £5 sale on Play.com has provided some classic reissues, including Simple Minds Sons and Fascination/Sister Feeling Call.

Laura Veirs - hardly a "music find" but relatively new to me - love her stuff!

Thanks, I actually discovered Midlake before The national, but yes they are in the same game. Alligator is good too but not as good as 'Boxer' IMO.

If you like The National I think 'The Hold Steady' are playing in the same league. Great lyrics.

Regards

That is a new one on me, the MySpace clips sound good so I may well check it out. We often overlap in musical taste! Do I need to say 'Willard Grant: Regard The End'? Robert Gomez: Brand New Towns might also float your boat too.

Have seen Willard Grant in a small venue in Newcastle about 5 years ago and they were class. 'Regard the End' is the only album of theirs I have. I added WGC to my friends in myspace and Robert sent a nice note back.

Don't think I know Robert Gomez, will check him out.

Thanks Bruce

Here is the Pitchfork review. A site which I am as likely to laugh at (with?) as follow slavishly but I have picked up a fair bit of stuff off the back of their recomendations. (They appear to love The Hold Steady but I've just noticed they gave 'Regard The End' a stinker!)

I picked up a cheap copy of 'The Hold Steady: Boys and Girls in America', dusted of my air guitar and played it a lot of the weekend. Reminded me of a revved up Richmond Fontaine with the excellent story-telling lyrics. Bit rockier than my usual pick but have enjoyed it.

Thanks

Bruce

I know what you mean Blueknowz, I'm wondering if the Vinyl has been better production/mastering because it could sound awesome.
