Is it just getting older, but I have found more to prune [in terms of performance, and not the actual range music repertoire] than add this year. This cutting back really started seriously eighteen months ago, and the things that have gone are not missed, and so I think a much bigger cut is in the offing. I am finding overtly romantic playing seems to cloy, and fail in the face of the extreme subtlety of some of the greatest musicians, who seem to manage the trick of concealing their artistry in performances that on first acquaintance might almost seem abrupt and lacking some immediate involvement, or sometimes can seem just slightly plain. On acquaintance you begin to see that the involvement is like a long, but still deeply affectionate marriage, where no one feels the need to kiss the beloved one in the street! Holding hands seems sufficient ...

In 1991 I had about 600 LPs and 300 CDs, and would eventually replaced almost all the LPs [sold at that time to help finance the restoration of my first really good double bass - London ca 1780] and got more CDs as well so that I had over 1000 CDs at one point. I think this is likely to come back to between 450 and 550 very soon.

I have about 60 I would like to buy at the moment ...

I am finding ever more pleasure from planned listening to radio broadcasts of concerts. Concert attanded, if anything now, seem almost too intense to bare on times ...

Still there are wonderful things to find, but it is getting more difficult to find something that is both novel and seems to please in the longer run ...

George

The complete symphonies of Robert Simpson (Hyperion CDS44191-7)

These works, written between 1951 and 1990 have an immense power, drive and energy - very unusual in contemporary music.

Beethoven for the modern world, and then some.

Strongly recommended. If you want to try one disc of the seven, I'd go for symphonies 6 + 7 (or 2 + 4 or 3 + 5), though the 7 disc set is only £38.50 at MDT.

I read Julian Cope's "Japrocksampler" which led me to stuff like Les Rallizes Denudes and Flower Travellin' Band at the of last year. Most of the stuff in Cope's Top 50 is very hard to find (in that sense the book is pretty frustrating) but in turn this has led me to investigate a few more modern Japanese acts, in particular Boredoms and Boris, both excellent heavy psychedilic rock.

My 'find' of the year has been the Cowboy Junkies' back catalogue-having had the Trinity Sessions but not previously explored any further. I've been really enjoying Lay It down, At The End of Paths Taken, and the Caution Horses in the last month or so. Some excellent stuff.

I've bought plenty of new music too and I'd probably pick the Mande Variations as the best-see that thread.

What is your fave music find of the year so far?

Hotel Costes series mixed by Stephane Pompougnac. most definitely the best CD set of the last three years or so for me, fab box set too. Volume 10 and 7 are particularly great.

Hi,

A bit of avante garde music that I heared 3 weeks ago at a concert by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra introduced me to Pol Ruders and his Concerto in Pieces which are variations on Purcell's Witches Chorus.

A bit like Nielsen with plenty of percussion - very good after I got used to it. Definitely music find of my year,

FF

I guess for me it has to be 'The National'

Wonderful intelligent poignant lyrics, deep voice showing limited emotion Ian Curtis like?), military drums, indie/rock guitar - fits together like a glove.
